Notice to Trainers

WHS Self Audit Document - to be completed and returned with licence application/renewal

As you are aware, horse trainers in NSW are responsible for the workplace health and safety (WHS) of all their employees and persons entering the workplace, under both the WHS legislation and Australian Rules of Racing. It is your responsibility to ensure that your workplace is free from hazards or potential hazards and safe for employees.

To assist with these responsibilities, Racing NSW decided to issue a self-audit document for trainers to review their WHS responsibilities themselves at their stables. The stable audit document is available on the Racing NSW website - here - and must be completed and returned with new licences and again at license renewal.

The checklist details some common hazards for people and horses, and will assist trainers in reviewing their place of operation. In conjunction with this process, the Racing NSW Board has also determined that WHS is of sufficient concern to warrant the appointment of an Officer so that NSW racehorse trainers may be provided with assistance in WHS issues. When you have completed the document please ensure that any problem areas identified in the audit have been addressed. It is your responsibility to complete the safety audit and to remove hazards.

Other important documents and links are available in the WHS section of the Racing NSW website and at SafeWork NSW. Trainers are advised to appraise themselves of the relevant information to ensure safe work practices.

Thank you for your co-operation. Racing NSW acknowledges the efforts of trainers in helping the industry achieve a high standard of WHS compliance in NSW, from which all participants benefit.
