Arising from changes to regulations and legislation under the OH&S Act, Racing NSW (and the NSW Country Racing Council) determined that all NSW race clubs (both professional and amateur) should participate in a training program to ensure that their responsibilities under the Act are understood.
To assist Clubs in this regard, Racing NSW commissioned the preparation of an OH&S Form Guide which clarifies these responsibilities in a thoroughbred racing industry context.
During February and March 2003 Racing NSW conducted a series of 6 two day OH&S seminars throughout NSW for race club managers. In addition a further two presentations were held during July. By attending these seminars and successfully completing the assessments Club Managers became accredited as OH&S Form Guide trainers, and are qualified to deliver OHS training to club staff and other industry personnel.
Each of the seminars was presented by Risk Management Expert and OHS consultant Ms Terrie Norman, with assistance from Andrew Small (CRC Projects Manager) Michael Thompson (TRB Insurance Manager) Marianne Chaffe (Industry Training Manager) or Michele Jackson (training consultant).
The administration of the project was jointly managed by Andrew Small and Gail Vitale (Industry Training).
After the project was complete, two of the newly accredited race club managers organised and conducted 'on training's seminars for their staff and other industry personnel. Ms Helen Sinclair, Secretary Scone Race Club and Ms Dianne Layden Secretary Crookwell Picnic Race Club have provided Form Guide Awareness training to a total of 68 racing industry employees.
