It’s not the biggest race on Goulburn’s Anniversary Cup day, but in the eyes of trainer Tash Burleigh it is. Her sole runner on Sunday – Territorial – will run in the race named in memory of her late boss Graeme Spackman.
It would mean a lot to Burleigh and her fellow owners if Territorial – a fast-finishing last start second behind Flash In The Dark – could win on the day that celebrates almost two decades since Goulburn commenced racing at its current track.
“This is the first year the race has been run and it has worked out well that I have a runner,” Burleigh said. “I did my apprenticeship as a jockey with Graeme then I was his stable foreperson for about four years. When he retired from training, I also took over some of his horses which really helped me get a kick along with some new owners.”
Burleigh has a lot to thank Spackman for who was an astute horseman based at Goulburn. Burleigh rode some 50 winners in her jockey days and is deriving a lot of satisfaction from training.
Territorial has only raced six times for a win and a second – his victory coming at Goulburn at the final start of his previous campaign. His first-up effort showed Territorial was right back to his best finishing ahead of Denman Diva (third) who has since won at Queanbeyan.
Impressive debut winner Mad Fox already has the score on the board at Goulburn winning in June while Goulburn trained galloper Cheat’m has an abundance of speed and looks set to be prominent.
Burleigh is pleased with the condition of Territorial: “It’s his second run back from a spell – he is pretty speedy and finishes his races off well,” she said. “He has won here before and hopefully he can work through his grades.”
The Goulburn track is rated a Good 4 for the seven-race program.
