Lightly-raced filly Hinchinjive has been knocking on the door of a breakthrough success and the promising three-year-old is ready to knock it down with the right luck at Kembla Grange on Saturday.

Trainer Ron Quinton is bringing his daughter of Hinchinbrook to Illawarra Turf Club confident she will run well when she lines up in the Uruzgan Maiden Handicap (1400m).

Hinchinjive has finished runner-up by less than half a length at Newcastle at her past two starts, including at her last visit to the races when a protest was lodged against the winner.

Apprentice jockey Dylan Gibbons and Quinton believed Hinchinjive had been interfered with by the winner Hatsuko over the final 150m, stunting the filly's momentum at a crucial time, however, the Stewards deemed the incident was only minor.

"I thought she was a bit unlucky not to get that protest," Quinton said.

"We felt there was legitimate interference in the straight and I have seen the upheld before but that's racing.

"She is three runs into her preparation and has run second at her last two runs now.

"This appears to be a good race for her. She handles the wet but Kembla has been in pretty bad shape recently."

Kembla Grange was rated a Heavy 8 on Friday morning with some showers forecast throughout the day.

Hinchinjive has been competitive on heavy tracks her past two starts, also finishing a narrow runner-up at Newcastle the start before her protest defeat. She will break new ground when she steps up over seven furlongs for the first time at Kembla.

"The distance shouldn't bother us at all," Quinton said. "This will be the furthest she has run over but she is a Hinchinbrook so it shouldn't worry her. Time will tell."

Hinchinjive didn't have a start in a race until her three-year-old season after she was picked up by Quinton for $115,000 at the 2020 Gold Coast Yearling Sale. He gave the filly two runs last spring at the provincials before starting fresh this campaign and believes the filly has returned a more complete package.

"This preparation she has been very good because last preparation she was a bit temperamental," he said. "She is learning her craft and sometimes some go one way, and others go the other. She isn't immature, she just has still got a bit more maturity to come."

Gibbons will continue his association with Hinchinjive this weekend. A field of eight runners has been assembled for Saturday's assignment with local trainers making up more than half of the field.

Father-son team Robert and Luke Price have three starters - Red Brick, Choose Your Weapon and Satness - Gwenda Markwell has Topple and Joseph Ible's Pearl Elite has also accepted.
