Neil Evans' Tips For Kembla Grange (Thursday)

By Neil Evans

Track Good 4 and rail out 8m from 1100m to WP, then 5m the remainder so likely on or near the speed before shifting wider late in the day

Race 1 CLASS 1 & MAIDEN PLATE (2000m):

The stayers kick off a strong meeting, and it's an open battle of tactics. Home track 3YO 4. The Guru from the Theresa Bateup stable has been finding the line well all prep without breaking through. Drawn to get a soft run, and rise to this trip seems over-due.

Dangers: Randwick 4YO mare 8. Zenardini has plenty more to offer than her one win and five placings from 17. Will relish the drop in grade third-up after working home okay at big odds in a metro BM 72, and blinkers go on. It's been a long while since the only win of Hawkesbury 4YO 2. Silent Agenda, but appears ready for this trip after three runs back, and the form behind Tampering is good. Goulburn 4YO mare 7. Rond De Jambe made a sustained run to win a similar race at Gundagai two runs back before plain at Nowra, but can rebound on the bigger track.

How to play it: The Guru to win and box exacta 2,4,8. Odds and Evens: Evens

Race 2 MAIDEN PLATE (1000m):

Back to the short course for the maidens, and bad luck from the outside barrier seems the only hurdle for smart 3YO gelding 6. Spaceboy from the Gary Portelli yard at Warwick Farm. Has run seven placings from nine starts, and trialled the house down winning by seven lengths running his last 600m in 33 secs flat!

Dangers: Expecting further improvement from 2YO Randwick filly 9. Kittyhawk Flyer who hit the line well on debut at Newcastle behind a potentially very smart winner, and gets a natural big pull in the weights after rider's claim. Another one from the Farm, 3YO 4. No Doubt A Star has trialled since closing off late as a hot favourite at Goulburn; while local 3YO 2. Doctor Mancini (Wandjina x Melrose Place by Purrealist) debuts off a nice trial win, and drawn to get a handy trail.

How to play it: Spaceboy to win and first four 6/2,4,9/2,4,9/2,4,9. Odds and Evens: Evens

Race 3 2YO MAIDEN PLATE (1000m):

Staying at the distance for the babies only, and the betting will be pivotal. Well bred colt 3. San Antonio (Snitzel x Bella Sunday by Sunday Silence) from the firing Maher-Eustace yard at Warwick Farm looks tough to beat on debut off two trial wins, especially the latest when he sat very wide, but still cruised through the line under a nice hold showing a lovely full stride.

Dangers: Randwick colt 4. Strategist stuck on okay as a well backed favourite on debut at Scone, and has since trialled okay; while debutant Randwick filly 6. Hoopla (Hinchinbrook x Our Miss Jones by Darci Brahma) looks forward enough off two spaced and winning trials.

How to play it: San Antonio to win. Odds and Evens: Split

San Antonio wins a trial at Warwick Farm on April 3

Race 4 C, G & E MAIDEN HCP (1400m):

Keen on 3YO Warwick Farm gelding 2. Zounate from the Portelli stable first-up after showing enough in his first prep. Did plenty of work from the 600m winning the second of two lead-up trials, and draws to get the right run.

Dangers: Far North Coast 3YO 4. Divine Eleven was solid through the line here, despite drifting in betting, after failing as a hot favourite first-up at Eagle Farm. Warwick Farm 3YO 6. Rebel Bro has found the line in his last couple at Orange and Nowra where the winner then only went down narrowly at Hawkesbury on Tuesday. Ready to peak, but some query over this trip. Big watch on another 3YO 3. Cosmic Bullet who debuts in blinkers off two trials, getting home late behind Zounate in his latest.

How to play it: Zounate each way and box trifecta 2,3,4,6. Odds and Evens: Evens

Race 5 F & M MAIDEN HCP (1400m):

Now the girls' turn over the same journey, and it's a far more even and open challenge. Like the placement third-up for the only 2YO in the field, 9. Hirondelle from the Godolphin camp. Did her best work late on debut in the heavy at Hawkesbury before again finishing well here over same trip when hard in the market. Can peak now at third run carrying 1kg less.

Dangers: Rosehill 4YO 8. Any Wish is well into her prep and still trying to break through after 10 starts, but should find this easier than her last few. Drawn wide but if she runs up to her effort at Newcastle two back behind Reinvest she'll be right in the finish. Randwick filly 2. Myzaboom made steady improvement into her second career run at Goulburn, and should be in the mix from a middle gate; while stablemate filly 7. Vivid Art comes out of that same Goulburn race when overhauled after leading to the turn. Include Hawkesbury mare 11. Just Like Jessie in exotics after running a place in her last three.

How to play it: Hirondelle to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 6 CLASS 2 HCP (1500m):

Good competitive race, with a few genuine chances. Progressive 3YO filly 4. Alchermes from the Ron Quinton stable at Randwick has quickly reached this grade after sweeping home to win her last two impressively, and looks to have superior scope over the rest. Draws to get the right trail off the fence, and show nice acceleration early in the straight.

Dangers: Rival 3YO Randwick gelding 2. Bullet Fly also looks well placed fourth-up. Wasn't far away in a stronger BM 64 at Newcastle, and should be hitting peak fitness. Surprised if one of those two doesn't win, but improving Warwick Farm filly 5. Sky Diamonds has ability, and was good late behind a smart galloper at Newcastle first-up. Don't under-state Goulburn 5YO 3. El Coyote who finished hard at home in first run for eight months, and while this is harder, second-up figures are good.

How to play it: Alchermes to win and quinella 2 and 4. Odds and Evens: Evens

Alchermes wins at Kembla Grange on April 7

Race 7 CLASS 1 HCP (1200m):

One of the tougher races on the card. Progressive 3YO 4. Snitzify from team Snowden at Randwick looks well suited second-up on the bigger track after charging late to miss narrowly first-up in a BM 64 at Gosford. Draws to get a nice run a few lengths off the speed.

Dangers: Watch the betting on Warwick Farm 3YO 2. Minted who returns off a near 11-month break as a gelding, and fitted with two trials, although has to cart 61kg from a wide gate. Include improving Randwick 3YO 6. Duty who fought on to land his maiden from the front third-up at Goulburn.

How to play it: Snitzify to win. Odds and Evens: Evens

Race 8 BM 64 HCP (1400m):

Godolphin-trained 3YO gelding 3. Golwen looks primed third-up from a good trailing draw after hitting the line in both runs back from a spell this grade.

Dangers: Warwick Farm mare 6. Renalot can mix her form, but was strong through the line winning a CL2 second-up at Goulburn, but faces a much tougher draw. Godolphin 3YO filly 13. History won her maiden from the front here two runs back before flat at Newcastle, but this looks more to her liking; while include Wyong mare 14. Joy For Us in exotics who needs to improve but is hard fit after four runs back.

How to play it: Golwen to win. Odds and Evens: Split.
