Neil Evans' Tips For Hawkesbury (Tuesday)

By Neil Evans

Track Good 4/Soft 5; rail true so gradual trend away from the fence.

Race 1 MAIDEN PLATE (1300m):

Warwick Farm-trained 3YO 4. Coolgardie looks well placed in this company off a freshen-up. Wasn't beaten far in only two runs at Gosford back in January, and while didn't show a lot trialling in heavy ground, a much firmer rating here is ideal.

Dangers: Big watch Rosehill gelding on debut 7. Pinvincible (Pins x Queen Of Lions by King Of Kings) who has finished off nicely at the trials; while a change of tactics saw locally-trained gelding 6. Niccirose hit the line hard last start, and should be peaking now third-up.

How to play it: Coolgardie to win.

Race 2 MAIDEN HCP (1100m):

Tricky race with several well bred first starters. One of those, Randwick filly 5. Glamour Cat (More Than Ready x Kittens by Redoubte's Choice) will be hard to stop if she runs up to her recent trial, and draws the inside.

Dangers: Debutant Warwick Farm filly 7. Sauvignon (Pierro x Angel Face by Fastnet Rock) has taken a while to get to the track, but trialled solid for a good stable with juveniles. Warwick Farm 2YO colt 9. Absolute Control has trialled well in heavy ground, but draws a wide barrier for second prep. Took on Time To Reign twice during the spring, and stable has had great success with youngsters this year. Rosehill-trained filly 11. Tawaret is much better then her earlier career runs, and resumes for top stable.

How to play it: Glamour Cat each way and first four 5-7-9/5-7-9-11-14.

Race 3 2YO MAIDEN HCP (1300m):

Very keen to see the return of smart Randwick colt 1. Creator after being well beaten on debut in December by a smart one, and the eventual Golden Slipper winner. Has trialled strong hitting the line hard for leading 2YO stable, and looks ready to fire this time in.

Dangers: Godolphin filly 9. Asiago produced a good first-up run in heavy ground behind the smart Dresden Green this track, and improves again on firmer footing, but has to overcome a wide draw. Stable has almost cornered the market with 2YO's this year. Randwick colt and early favourite 13. Just Thinkin' was very ordinary on debut at Newcastle, but likely big improver here. Watch for improvement too from Hawkesbury filly 11. Chia who didn't really let down in the going at Gosford, and better suited third-up here.

How to play it: Creator to win.

Race 4 CL1 HCP (1800m):

Promising Rosehill filly 5. On The White Turf was heavily backed when winning her maiden in emphatic fashion third-up in the heavy at Kembla, and should lap up the extra trip.

Dangers: Warwick Farm 3YO gelding 3. Live The Moment landed some good bets to win second up this track, and didn't miss by much last start at Newcastle. Looks suited by the extra journey. Warwick Farm gelding 2. Taj broke though third-up controlling the speed this track for leading stable, and will get his chance to do the same here. Improving Rosehill gelding 1. Head Up High looks the best of the rest.

How to play it: On The White Turf to win.

On The White Turf wins at Kembla Grange on March 23

Race 5 MAIDEN PLATE (1500m):

Rosehill gelding 5. Corporal wouldn't have to improve much to win this after chasing home a smart one at Newcastle for leading metro stable. The one to beat!

Dangers: Randwick gelding 4. Chauvinist has held his ground okay in three runs this prep, and should peak now at the extra distance. Expect Randwick colt 7. Meticulous to improve sharply at second run after being well backed on debut at Kembla; while liked the second-up run from Kembla filly 13. Winter In America this track and should be included in wider exotics.

How to play it: Corporal to win and quinella 4 and 5.

Race 6 CL2 HCP (1000m):

Plenty of depth and potential in this. Really liked the heavy track trial of well bred Rosehill gelding 2. Happy Bubbles who was never let go, and returns for a second prep and only third career run. Landed a plunge when sweeping home to win on debut at Newcastle last winter.

Dangers: Hawkesbury gelding 1. Rare Episode is a smart youngster returning as a gelding for a second campaign off a nice forward trial. Bolted in as a hot favourite on debut at Gosford in the spring, and also won a BM 64 at Kembla fourth-up. Has the early speed to off-set a wider gate. Local gelding 3. Captain Courageous hung on to beat the smart Colombina three runs back, and has been close up since. Fourth straight run on his home track. Warwick Farm 4YO mare 6. Hylonome won two of three in first prep late last year, and tuned up for a good return with a solid trial. Draws the fence. Unbeaten Goulburn gelding 4. Feel The Knight has won his only two starts at Wagga and Canberra, but this is a much tougher test.

How to play it: Happy Bubbles to win and trifecta 1-2-8/1-2-3-4-6.

Race 7 BM 64 HCP (1100m):

Very competitive, but Newcastle-trained and well bred filly 2. Asharani looks head to beat. Progressed to Group 2 level in the spring, and resumed with a strong win from off the speed in the heavy at Kembla.

Dangers: Warwick Farm 3YO gelding 3. Broken Arrows has been a model of consistency since winning his maiden four runs back, and was only overwhelmed late by Asharani at Kembla. Expect Wyong mare 6. Classy Ana to improve after not really handling the heavy 9 at Kembla. Has a decent strike rate and was competitive up to BM 74 level last winter. Rosehill gelding 7. Hostwin Saturn returns for another prep and won on debut this track in the spring; while the early speed should come from local 3YO gelding 9. Indicators On who resumed with a fair effort in a BM 65 at Canberra, and drops in weight for this.

How to play it: Asharani to win and trifecta 2-3-6/2-3-6-7-9.

Race 8 BM 64 HCP (1500m):

A tricky affair to finish, although well-bred filly 8. Re Edit is likely to be all the rage resuming after winning a trial on the synthetic by 14 lengths over 1175m for leading metro yard. Came from off the speed to win on debut in late spring, and while bred to get much further, can produce a cracking final 400m fresh.

Dangers: Local gelding 1. Redemption Road is at his best on top of the ground, and won this track and grade first-up before competitive against stronger. Forced to cart a big weight from wide barrier. Rosehill gelding 6. Fast Train was huge odds resuming at Newcastle this grade, but still worked home okay, and will improve as the distances get longer. Only career win was breaking his maiden by more than six lengths on this track.

How to play it: Re Edit to win.
