Neil Evans' Tips For Wyong (Thursday)

By Neil Evans

Track likely Soft 5 and rail out 3m

Race 1 MAIDEN HCP (1600m):

We start with the maidens over the mile on an improving track. Keen on All Too Hard filly 3. Angelina Sistina third-up in her first full prep. Was hard enough in the market when no match for the winner here a fortnight back, but ready to peak over the same track and trip.

Dangers: Improving Godolphin filly 2. Tangier can also figure at her third start after being beaten narrowly in a handy Kembla maiden. Up 3kg, but again drawn to park right behind the speed. Gap to the rest headed by local four-year-old 1. River Tycoon having third start for the new stable with blinkers coming off.

How to play it: Angelina Sistina to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 2 4YO & UP MAIDEN PLATE (1100m):

Back in distance at set weights for the older maidens, and local four-year-old 1. Buckin' Rippa can finally break through fourth-up and at his 22nd start. Has been working home over shorter journeys all prep, and from a soft trailing draw in a very average race, this is his golden chance.

Dangers: Expecting home track mare 8. Stonesthrow to come back a stronger and better galloper for her third start after two forward trials. Include in exotics home track five-year-old 3. Mr Ripley third-up.

How to play it: Buckin' Rippa to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 3 3YO MAIDEN HCP (1100m):

Highly touted Medaglia d'Oro gelding 1. Da Nang Star is on debut for a leading metro yard off three recent trials. Showed natural cruising speed and careered away from the field to win his latest in slick time, with plenty still in the tank. From a good draw around this course, he can start with a bang.

Dangers: Big market watch on improving provincial filly 3. Miss Checkconi who hit the line late at big odds on debut. Another provincial filly 6. Syzygy Stars - by Golden Slipper winner Vancouver - debuts off two trials, bolting in her latest; while 5. Sarandos resumes off two trials with blinkers removed.

How to play it: Da Nang Star to win. Odds and Evens: Odds

Race 4 MAIDEN PLATE (1350m):

Home track mare 9. Toguchi should have won last start at Gosford, missing by a nose after being held up at a vital stage. New rider's 3kg claim gets her in very well at the weights, and she draws to get a winning trail.

Dangers: Honest three-year-old 6. Volterra worked home nicely in a deeper metro race second-up, and can figure in this company; while 3. Lucky To Win was beaten a long way in that same race and faces a big weight hike.

How to play it: Toguchi to win and quinella 6 and 9. Odds and Evens: Split

Toguchi runs third at Gosford on June 10

Race 5 CLASS 1 & MAIDEN PLATE (2100m):

Hard fit and at his peak, home track four-year-old 4. Oakfield Cherokee has more advancement than most of these put together. Charged home from well back behind a handy one at Newcastle two runs back before a sharp step up to this distance, again working home strong in a good quality Class 1. Top hoop sticks.

Dangers: Bad luck is the biggest threat, although local four-year-old 8. Dunlee can run the quinella getting out to his best distance third-up. Include 5. Yak and 1. Every Effort in exotics.

How to play it: Oakfield Cherokee to win and trifecta 4/1,5,8/1,5,8. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 6 CLASS 1 HCP (1100m):

From the inside draw, three-year-old 1. Osamu is suited coming back to this trip, and with the big weight off-set via a 3kg claim. Over-raced early last time in a much tougher race, and can make it two wins from his last three.

Dangers: Progressive three-year-old 2. Prince Invincible ran them off their feet third-up under a big weight, and will carry 2.5kg less for this next step. Tough and under-rated three-year-old 3. Son Of Sampson has attacked the line in all three runs this prep, and gets good weight relief back into this company.

How to play it: Osamu to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Osamu runs fourth at Canterbury on May 26

Race 7 BENCHMARK 64 HCP (1350m):

A stack of chances in this one headed by local four-year-old 8. Budhwar who has been up for a while, but only missed by a head in a similar race here two weeks ago. Draws to be tucked away just off the speed, and will be strong late.

Dangers: Improving three-year-old 2. Sian has been given a month for the drop back in trip since sweeping home to win a CL1 at Newcastle. Well weighted after the claim, and if he can get in from the awkward gate will also be finishing hard.

How to play it: Budhwar to win. Odds and Evens: Split.

Race 8 BENCHMARK 64 HCP (1600m):

Open battle to finish, and two runners stand out. Despite a wide draw and big weight, lightly-raced three-year-old 1. Sonic Tycoon is the one going places. Did little resuming in a similar provincial race, but that was on heavy ground, and he won both starts to open his career last prep on firm going.

Dangers: Expect big improvement second-up from provincial mare 2. Dundee Lee who virtually trailed then home resuming in a much stronger metro race. She gets out to a pet distance, and looks treated okay at the weights considering she's a metro BM 72 winner. Honest finisher 8. Salsa Man doesn't win often, but two of his three career wins have come here, and also gets back out to a more suitable journey.

How to play it: Sonic Tycoon and Dundee Lee both to win. Odds and Evens: Split

BEST BETS:
R4 9. TOGUCHI
R6 1. OSAMU

BEST VALUE:
R8 1. SONIC TYCOON
