Neil Evans' Tips For Goulburn (Tuesday)

By Neil Evans

Track Soft 7 and rail out 3m from 1000m to 400m & True the remainder

Race 1 COLTS, GELDINGS & ENTIRES MAIDEN HCP (1400m):

With the transfer of the meeting from Kembla, we may stay in soft range rather than extreme heavy, although rain is forecast. Tricky opener with some first starters on show, and most of the exposed form is ordinary. Improving US-sired three-year-old 5. Bobby Is King let punters down on debut at Canberra before a handy run in deeper metro company. Bred to handle soft ground and winkers have been added.

Dangers: Always had time for 4. River Snitty who resumes behind a nice trial win, but has failed in both race and trial runs on heavy ground. Local four-year-old 6. Blackall and American Pharoah three-year-old 3. Peacemaker on debut are both market watches.

How to play it: Bobby Is King to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 2 FILLIES & MARES MAIDEN HCP (1400m):

Progressive filly 2. Definitely Maybe can bounce back after failing to finish off at Wyong at her second start. Had previously missed by a whisker on debut in a handy provincial maiden, and three improving trials prior were all on a Soft 7 rating. Can handle the conditions.

Dangers: Debutant Proisir mare 1. Rangitikei looks ready to go off two sharply improving trials for the leading metropolitan stable.

How to play it: Definitely Maybe to win and quinella 1 and 2. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 3 CLASS 1 HCP (1400m):

Very testing affair, with several chances. Like Real Impact three-year-old 4. Kokoro who returns as a gelding with blinkers on for the first time. Drawn off the track, but bred to handle wet tracks, and well fitted with two trials over 1050m. Bolted in his maiden at second start last spring before immediately holding his own in Group 3 company.

Dangers: Progressive filly 7. Eye Pea Oh was dominant from the front in a country maiden at her second start when backed from $3.90 into $3.10, and drew to roll forward again. Must keep safe stablemate three-year-old 3. Eyes To Eye who also resumes behind two trials; while home track four-year-old 2. Highballer has been honest in four runs this prep.

How to play it: Kokoro to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 4 MAIDEN PLATE (1200m):

In an open race, consistent mare 5. She Can Talk is well over the odds first-up since spring. Won the second of two trials on Soft 7 ground, and was regularly in the placings last year in handy maidens. Is sired by I'm All The Talk who was competitive enough in group company.

Dangers: Godolphin filly 9. Seda is first-up off a long break and two trials, and draws the inside; while including 6. Amathuba third-up with the blinkers coming off.

How to play it: She Can Talk each way and box exacta 5,6,9. Odds and Evens: Split.

Race 5 BENCHMARK 64 HCP (1000m):

Back to the short course for the older sprinters, and there are a stack of value chances headed by underrated provincial mare 8. Pindarra's Dream who lines up for her sixth start in two months, dropping back from a metro BM 72. Has hit the line from midfield in her last two runs, and will appreciate being back on the bigger track.

Dangers: Talented Godolphin filly 9. Speech has been given four weeks via a trial win, since finishing hard as a hot favorite at Scone although not convinced the inside gate here does her any favours. Local mare and first-up winner 6. Comeback Star has early speed and bred to relish the wet, but taking on some better ones here; and 4. Allusionist who comes off a third-up maiden win; are both exotic players.

How to play it: Pindarra's Dream each way. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 6 BENCHMARK 68 HCP (1300m):

Keen on lightly raced three-year-old 2. Turning who can make it two straight this prep, although may go to Warwick Farm on Wed now this meeting has been moved. Put a similar field to the sword 17 days ago after stalking the speed, and this isn't much harder. Right at home on rain-affected ground and headed for bigger targets than this.

Dangers: Tough seven-year-old 1. Highly Desired resumes off a quiet trial, and has a 20 percent winning strike rate from 36 starts. Keep safe at bigger odds 3. Wild Chap second-up; while 5. Zouologist heads the rest fifth-up.

How to play it: Turning to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 7 BENCHMARK 64 HCP (1600m):

Like the way progressive three-year-old 10. Paternal closed off at Warwick Farm in just his second start after a fast-finishing debut win. Will relish the long run home here, and bred to thrive on rain-affected going.

Dangers: Metro four-year-old 7. Remus is hard fit and has been campaigning in metro BM 72 grade. Improving mare 6. Stolen Glance rushed home to miss by a whisker in a useful CL3 last start; while 1. Olympic Theatre can improve sharply third-up dropping back from provincial level.

How to play it: Paternal to win. Odds and Evens: Split

BEST BETS:
R6 2. TURNING
R7 10. PATERNAL

BEST VALUE:
R5 8. PINDARRA'S DREAM
