Neil Evans' Tips For Gosford (Tuesday)

By Neil Evans

Track Good 4 and rail out 3m:

Race 1 MAIDEN PLATE (1200m):

The maidens get us rolling at set weights on a track that should remain in Good range despite a shower or two forecast. Have to like the way emerging filly 8. First Class Molley has found the line in two runs so far, the latest finishing under a length here when a rock solid favourite. Can park a touch closer from an even better draw this time, and striking a fitness peak, she's ready to break through.

Dangers: Yet another above average one by Capitalist, 2. Cappelletti returns for a second prep behind two trials, the latest bolting in at Rosehill by more than five lengths, although the time wasn't overly flash. Big watch on 1. Boy Loves To Run who led for a long way first-up in a handy country maiden; while Lonhro filly 10. Social Butterfly debuts in blinkers behind a couple of quieter trials.

How to play it: First Class Molley to win
Odds and Evens: Evens

Race 2 CLASS 1 HCP (1200m):

Very keen here on Your Song filly 8. Smooth Sailing 16 days after she swept home to easily win a girls' maiden at Nowra. Easily broke 1.03 mins for the 1100m that day, and came after a couple of smart metro trials. Draws to get good cover back in the field, and any rain would be a further plus. The one to beat.

Dangers: Improving 1. Hamaki worked home okay in a provincial BM 64 fourth-up, and has an edge in race fitness; while 7. Announcing can also run into the money at her third start coming back from provincial BM 64 level, with blinkers added.

How to play it: Smooth Sailing to win
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 3 MAIDEN HCP (1600m):

Tricky contest over the mile with the John Thompson stable at Randwick potentially having a big hand. One of them, progressive Pierro filly 12. Whisker To Whisker is suited over a furling further second-up. Settled back last at big odds in a more than handy metro maiden before working home strong, and the second horse from that race then won easily seven days later. A much softer draw should allow her to sit closer this time, and she only needs to get a clear run from the 450m to be right in the finish.

Dangers: Stablemate four-year-old 6. Silvincible draws right alongside after hitting the line well enough third-up, and drops 2kg for this. Keep safe 3. Mountain Guest who emerges from that same formline as the top selection, and will relish more ground.

How to play it: Whisker To Whisker to win
Odds and Evens: Evens

Race 4 MAIDEN PLATE (1000m):

Back to the short course now, and patience can pay off here with Capitalist four-year-old 1. Free Enterprise on debut. Had three trials in six weeks, bolting in the latest by nearly four lengths after opening up the field early, and has been gelded. Was set to launch this time last week at Wyong, but held back for this meeting.

Dangers: : Improving filly 11. Idalo stuck on okay behind the top selection from race 2 in that Nowra race, and while this is deeper, she carries 3kg less after the claim. Watch the betting on stablemate and ex-Victorian filly 9. Astalena having her first start for the Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou yard off a nine week break. Promising home track four-year-old 4. Secret Spy third-up and five weeks between runs; heads the rest.

How to play it: Free Enterprise to win
Odds and Evens: Odds

Race 5 PROVINCIAL BENCHMARK 64 HCP (1100m):

Typically there's plenty of chances around this grade, although tough and consistent four-year-old 2. Oxford Vision again represents good value deep into the prep. Finished best to claim a Midway CL1 here two starts ago before very stiff not to win a similar race at Hawkesbury a fortnight back when missing the start. Draws to get a lovely camp behind the speed, and is well used to carrying these sorts of weights.

Dangers: Honest home tracker 8. Geewiz Johnny couldn't be any fitter, and backs up in 10 days after hitting the line well in a CL1 here. The market will tell a story with resuming 5. Why Big Bry who hasn't started for nearly 11 months but can come to hand quickly. Include 12. Jutland third-up and dropping sharply in weight; in exotic bets.

How to play it: Oxford Vision to win
Odds and Evens: Evens

Race 6 BENCHMARK 64 HCP (1600m):

Very forgiving here of lightly raced colt 6. Field Marshal who lost his way back in the field at Hawkesbury in shifty ground first-up, yet still was only a bit over two lengths from the winner. Won both starts in his first prep last spring, and back on much firmer ground from a soft trailing draw is a huge plus.

Dangers: Progressive metro three-year-old 1. Stonecoat was close-up in that same race as the top selection when tracking the speed, but shapes under the odds here carrying 61kg from a wide draw. Must respect 2. Dirty Merchant who can utilise tactical speed from a soft draw fourth-up, and slips back from a deeper BM 68 metro race. Honest 10. Tip Top Timing has won two of his last against thinner opposition; and heads the remainder.

How to play it: Field Marshal to win
Odds and Evens: Split

Race 7 BENCHMARK 68 HCP (1200m):

The most open race on the card is saved for last. Love the value here about smart country five-year-old 3. Ceasefire resuming behind two improving trials up to 1000m. Proven weight carrier who has won two from there starts fresh, and although he's more at home on a bigger track, only needs clear air from the 400m to attack the line.

Dangers: Country mare 9. Moetta is a smart sprinter and never raced better. Swept home to win a BM 66 two runs ago before being edged out late in a feature country BM 85 sprint, but a query at the price tackling a deeper provincial race. Must include 1. Amulet Street third-up, with blinkers again coming off; and capable 2. Anythink Goes resuming as a gelding from a wide draw behind two quiet trials. Hard fit mare 11. Obvious Step who has been in the money in four of her last five; 13. Zelago third-up; and 14. Verzenay also third-up and down sharply in weight; are all capable of running into the money.

How to play it: Ceasefire each way
Odds and Evens: Odds

BEST BETS:
R2 8. SMOOTH SAILING
R5 2. OXFORD VISION

BEST VALUE:
R6 6. FIELD MARSHAL
