Neil Evans' Tips For Gosford (Thursday)

By Neil Evans

Track likely Soft 7 and rail out 2m from 1100m to 300m and True the remainder

Race 1 CLASS 1 HCP (1000m):

This shapes as a lovely first-up assignment for Your Song filly 2. Your Too Good behind two progressive trials. Has a smart fresh record, and right at home in the soft going.

Dangers: Rival metro filly 1. Rocklily is another returning off two trials, and only win in five starts last year came on a Heavy 9 rating leading all the way. Improving 3. Native Rock third-up is clear on the next line third-up.

How to play it: Your Too Good to win; quinella 1 and 2 and trifecta (in order) 2-1-3. Odds and Evens: Split a special

Race 2 MAIDEN HCP (1200m):

The weights tell us another two-horse war looms in this. Progressive Deep Field three-year-old 2. Fielding must be the one to beat off his encouraging debut run at Wyong 26 days ago when very well backed. Was scratched early from the next race to run in this.

Dangers: With an edge in fitness third-up, 1. Legend Rules is the natural threat after only being run down late in a handy provincial maiden 11 days back. Improving filly 3. Georgian Bay is clear next best after a tidy effort on debut at the provincials, and drops 2kg in weight.

How to play it: Fielding to win and trifecta (in order) 2-1-3. Odds and Evens: Split a special

Race 3 PROV & CTRY MAIDEN PLATE (1200m):

Bigger field and wider battle here. Lightly raced provincial three-year-old 6. Gulf Of Tomini did his best work late first-up in heavy ground at Port when forced a long way back from the outside draw. Can park a little closer here over 100m further with enough speed on up front, and bred to relish any amount of rain.

Dangers: Provincial three-year-old 10. Ting Tong resumes for only his second prep behind two trials, finding the line to win the second over 1000m. Time was only ordinary though, and from a wide gate he appears under the odds. Keep safe improving 7. Meerut who chased home a dominant winner at his second start, and will appreciate the extra trip; while filly 14. Verzenay gets some weight relief at her third start.

How to play it: Gulf Of Tomini to win. Odds and Evens: Evens

Race 4 BENCHMARK 64 HCP (1600m):

Tricky race over the mile. On-speed four-year-old 1. Sonic Tycoon has been given three weeks since dropping out in tougher company at Warwick Farm, but he was in the worst part of the track that day. Back up in weight naturally for this weaker class, but he can roll forward at his leisure from the inside barrier.

Dangers: Tough five-year-old 7. The Chosen One dug deep to hold off the challengers and win third-up at Muswellbrook, and down 2kg in weight for this harder test. Including eight-year-old 4. Mo The Great who sat just behind the speed and finished best to win a similar race here two starts ago. Held on fairly after leading last start, but can be ridden with a trail from this draw. Honest four-year-old 8. Theo Legion is best of the rest.

How to play it: Sonic Tycoon to win and box trifecta 1,4,7,8. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 5 MAIDEN HCP (1600m):

Same distance for the maidens, and this is break-through time for talented provincial filly 6. Miss Calculation who has beaten all but the winner in two of three runs this prep, without much luck. Gets a nice trail just behind the speed, with an in-form apprentice taking over.

Dangers: Improving mare 5. Tonnie Winnie did her best work late in a handy maiden on debut, and will also relish a longer trip. Expect stablemate Snitzel colt 3. Tidal Creek to hit back hard at third start after virtually taking no part at Wyong 11 days ago when jumping the crossing and nearly dislodging the rider. Was eased right out, and also lost a plate in the run.

How to play it: Miss Calculation to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 6 BENCHMARK 64 HCP (2100m):

Out in distance for one of the more open races on the program. Hard to believe capable mare 4. Kiterro still only has one win from 12 starts, but placed a further seven times, often after looming large. Was only plain holding her position in a CL1 at Kembla third-up, but better when she can get to the outside of horses. Relishes soft ground, and leading metro hoop taking over is significant in a thin race for this level.

Dangers: Tough mare 7. Sprout Wings has played "bridesmaid" in her last four runs, but she's been given three weeks since edged out in a CL1 at Canberra, and draws the inside. Honest four-year-old 1. Real Peace has been just fair in four runs this prep, and a query in the ground, but this is a sharp drop in class. Included in exotics 8. Dodecanese hard fit from a good draw.

How to play it: Kiterro to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 7 COLTS, GELDINGS & ENTIRES BENCHMARK 64 HCP (1200m):

Emerging three-year-old 4. Pole Position is headed for bigger targets. Sat off the speed on debut at Muswellbrook before sweeping past with ease, and had plenty in the tank on the line. Had previously trialled well at this track in soft ground, and winkers have been added. The one to beat.

Dangers: Lightly raced 5. Sea Treasures returns for a second prep behind two trials, and is also headed for greener pastures. Keep safe 6. Joey's Chance who doesn't win often, but worked home well in his last three, and is as tough as they come. The stable has taken its time to select the first-up assignment for four-year-old US-bred import 3. Jack Duggan after two quiet trials. Will likely need the run but watch for him late; while 1. Tinka's Lad resumes with a 2kg claim and blinkers removed.

How to play it: Pole Position to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 8 FILLIES & MARES BENCHMARK 64 HCP (1200m):

The girls' edition is an open and weakened affair. Provincial four-year-old 2. Linguee resumes off a five month absence, but normally comes to hand quickly, and all three career wins from eight starts have come on soft ground.

Dangers: Godolphin three-year-old 4. Hellfast has been given a six week freshen-up via a nice trial since finishing best to claim her maiden at Newcastle. Last start maiden winner at this track, 5. Hayami must also be kept safe fourth-up from the inside gate; while four-year-old 1. Windsweep is over the odds fifth-up despite carrying a big weight.

How to play it: Linguee to win. Odds and Evens: Split

BEST BETS:
R1 2. YOUR TOO GOOD
R7 4. POLE POSITION

BEST VALUE:
R6 4. KITERRO
