Neil Evans' Tips For Gosford (Thursday)

By Neil Evans

Track likely Good 4 and rail True:

Race 1 BENCHMARK 64 HCP (2600m):

Competitive staying test to get us rolling. Keen on Dundeel mare 3. Atonement who kept chasing second-up off a two month spell at Wyong in a similar graded race. Fitter now, and can peak over the longer journey carrying the same weight after the claim.

Dangers: Provincial four-year-old 1. Alastor held off the top selection, leading all the way at huge odds. Hard fit, will naturally roll forward and give a sight from the inside gate; while 2. Power Of Attorney will appreciate the longer trip after working home okay in his last couple, and has been kept ticking over at the trials.

How to play it: Atonement to win. Odds and Evens: Odds

Race 2 CLASS 1 HCP (1600m):

Back to the mile, and despite only one win from 20 starts, tough four-year-old 3. Lucky To Win can strike coming back in distance 20 days between runs. Was close-up in two provincial runs before working home okay in a deeper race at Canterbury, and the winner then scored again last Friday night.

Dangers: Big watch on lightly raced mare 2. Shameless Miss who resumes behind a quiet trial from an ideal trailing draw; while 1. Hadouken can continue to improve fourth-up over more ground. Included in exotics 8. Tornado Light fourth-up over further.

How to play it: Lucky To Win to win. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 3 PROV & CTRY 4YO & UP MAIDEN PLATE (1100m):

Even sprint here for the older maidens. Keen on home track mare 6. Hasalake who resumes off a lengthy spell, with blinkers applied for the first time. Has never been out of a place in five spaced runs so far, and trial suggests she's ready to fire nice and fresh. Well weighted after the claim.

Dangers: Another mare trained on the track, 9. Miss Checkoni has been off the scene for six months, but fitted for her return with a nice trial win three weeks back, and draws to get cover. Keep safe four-year-old 2. Beholder who resumes off a handy trial, with blinkers coming off. Country mare 7. Love Marilyn debuts in winkers behind a recent trial win.

How to play it: Hasalake to win and box first four 2,6,7,9. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 4 PROV & CTRY MAIDEN PLATE (1200m):

Home track four-year-old 5. The Winter Sun has done plenty of work, including two tidy and forward 1000m trials, ahead of his return for a second prep. Stable has shown its confidence booking leading metropolitan jockey.

Dangers: Home track filly 9. Abuela has been given four weeks since a nice first-up effort here, chasing home a smart and heavily backed winner, and looks well placed carrying 1kg less. Local four-year-old 2. Niccyas can peak third-up after chasing hard behind a handy winner at Taree; while including 6. Damood fresh in exotics.

How to play it: The Winter Sun to win and quinella 5 and 9. Odds and Evens: Odds

Race 5 3YO MAIDEN HCP (1600m):

Keen on progressive Pierro filly 3. Chenin at her second start after working home impressively on debut at Warwick Farm. Gets a crucial 2kg weight drop back in provincial company.

Dangers: Well-bred Snitzel gelding 1. Castlereagh Kid resumes for a second prep behind two trials, and from a soft draw; while expect both 4. Gulf Of Sidra at his second start; and hard fit 8. Gerardjoseph to be running on well.

How to play it: Chenin to win. Odds and Evens: Odds

Race 6 CLASS 1 HCP (1200m):

Like the placement of metro filly 6. Miss Glenn who can make it two straight at the track. Trailed the speed at only her third start before sweeping past in dominant fashion, and this isn't much harder.

Dangers: Speedy mare 5. Emissive made a big impact on debut careering away to win a thin maiden in the country by nearly seven lengths. Naturally meeting some better ones here, but should give a huge sight on a suitably small track. Expect improving 8. Sebring's Rose to be charging home again second-up. Her run under a big weight on the Beaumont track was very good, hitting the line hard into a place despite being held up at a vital stage in the straight. Gap to the rest.

How to play it: Miss Glenn to win and box trifecta 5,6,8. Odds and Evens: Split

Race 7 BENCHMARK 64 HCP (1100m):

This looms as payback time for four-year-old mare 6. Twitch after compounding from the front in a deeper metro race third-up when well backed. Better placed here back 100m in trip on a firmer track that will play far more fairly than Warwick Farm.

Dangers: Talented filly 7. Zetarita is a big threat second-up after working home late in a race with more depth here 13 days ago. Godolphoin three-year-old 1. Retrieval also drops in grade from metro company fourth-up, and draws the inside; while 4. Gidgee Guy made up good late ground behind a tough sprinter first-up, and normally holds that form into his next run.

How to play it: Twitch to win. Odds and Evens: Split

BEST BETS:
R1 3. ATONEMENT
R5 3. CHENIN

BEST VALUE:
R4 5. THE WINTER SUN
