Neil Evans' Tips For Gosford (Friday)

By Neil Evans

Track Soft 5 and rail out 3m from 1100m to 300m and True the remainder:

Race 1 FILLIES & MARES BENCHMARK 64 HCP (1200m):

The girls kick off the program, and two metropolitan fillies with low draws shape as the clear ones to beat, and will likely fight for favouritism. Settled on 3. Missouk with an edge in race fitness, and drew the inside. Was well backed before failing to attack the line here three weeks back, but less depth this time around, and doesn't need to improve much.

Dangers: Naturally, speedy 4. Rockabilly Rebel is a big threat resuming behind two progressive trials, cruising home in the last in soft ground. Draws well, and carries 2kg less than the top selection after the claim. The second start maiden win of 7. Monte Kate was very strong, shaking off the challengers when challenged at the furlong, and she drew to find a handy trail. Keep safe both 1. Nicci's Gem shooting for a third win from her last four up in class; and 8. Pins And Needles who swept home to win a provincial maiden first-up.

How to play it: Missouk to win and quinella 3 and 4

Race 2 PROVINCIAL MAIDEN HCP (1200m):

Tougher and wider sprint here, but good value about improving filly 8. Achlys second-up. Made up a little late ground from the back when resuming in a slightly deeper race on the Beaumont track, but will come on big from that run staying at the trip, and crucially with blinkers back on.

Dangers: Plenty of them starting with another improver in 1. Let's Go Johnny who ran home okay resuming here at bigger odds, and drawn to do no work back in the field on the fence. Watch the betting on 5. Sashabella resuming for a smart fresh yard behind two trials; while debutant Invader filly 6. Pitch Invader is on the next line.

How to play it: Achlys to win

Race 3 MAIDEN PLATE (1900m):

Tactical battle here for the maidens over a longer trip, and the recipe looks tasty for progressive and well bred four-year-old 3. Community who draws to peak fourth-up over more ground. Ridden quiet at the back before unleashing a powerful finish to be beaten under a length here over a mile, and the 12-day back-up is a strong stable lead.

Dangers: Lightly raced and improving 9. Cheval Gris draws to find the right sort of trail just off the speed, and can run the quinella third-up; while 10. Tell Me Ma also maps well deep into the prep, and can run into the finish. Despite drawing wide barriers, 2. Booster Shot who will be ridden cold coming back from a tougher metro field; and 5. Bonaventure fitter third-up; can both add plenty of value into exotic returns.

How to play it: Community to win

Race 4 COLTS, GELDINGS & ENTIRE BENCHMARK 64 HCP (1200m):

Now the boys edition of that opening set-up, and in a tricky race of several chances, can't ignore the big early value around tough country veteran 10. Tim's Principal who hasn't finished further back than fourth in his last four, and continues to race well. Powered home to beat a similar field here three starts ago before closing off well in his next two. More depth in this, but he's drawn to find cover back in the pack, and be saved for one final surge from the 400m.

Dangers: Big watch on 7. Mad Deel second-up who has more than enough ability, but inferior rider goes on. The market will be a solid indicator too with 1. Merry Mac Boy who will relish getting back on firmer ground fourth-up after dropping out in tougher grade on a bog track at Warwick Farm. Another one ready to peak after three runs back is 4. Time For Victory; while 5. Angara is hard fit and goes in exotic plays.

How to play it: Tim's Principal each way

Race 5 MAIDEN PLATE (1100m):

Open and bigger field of maidens here at set weights. Confident progressive metro three-year-old 6. Midnight Harry can strike second-up at good odds. Was rock solid in the market when hitting the line hard here from midfield and only missing by a neck. Fitter now, he can park a little closer from a similar draw, and go one better with a strong jockey taking over. Was scratched from Thursday's Newcastle meeting to be saved for what is now a weakened race.

Dangers: Capable filly 11. Full Revolution is another second-up improver for Team Snowden from a handy draw. Over the odds is improving 9. Are Ee Que who missed a place as a hot favourite here on debut. Gap to the rest.

How to play it: Midnight Harry to win

Race 6 CLASS 1 HCP (1600m):

Tough and consistent on-speed four-year-old 2. Oakfield Eagle is well placed to add an overdue second career win deep into the prep. Tracked the speed before careering away to bolt in a Super Maiden here three starts back, then was twice edged out narrowly in similar line-ups over the mile. Even better drawn this time rolling forward and dictating over his pet trip.

Dangers: Strong improver 1. Ekeler is a threat fourth-up behind a break-through Super Maiden win at Canterbury, and another one to bypass Newcastle and race here. Keep very safe 7. Subarctic third-up from the fence draw, and dropping sharply in weight. Be shocked if one of those three doesn't win, with improving 4. Star Legacy deep into the campaign sitting on the next line.

How to play it: Oakfield Eagle to win

Race 7 MIDWAY BENCHMARK 64 HCP (1000m):

We close over the pure sprint trip, and it shapes ideally for promising metro mare 4. Treize to make it two on the bounce this prep, and three from five overall. Had plenty over her city rivals leading all the way first-up, and cruised home to win at the same stage last prep. Weight rise is off-set by a 3kg claim coming back to a more suitable and shorter trip, and she's headed for better races than this.

Dangers: Improving 2. Procrastinator is trained on the track, and a threat resuming off an easy trial, especially with the stablemate likely to come out. As he quite often is, 5. Par Five is over the odds fourth-up with a key gear change; while 1. Oceans One down in grade second-up; and 7. Fludway resuming as a gelding behind two soft trials and preferred here to Newcastle on Thursday; are both each-way chances at good odds.

How to play it: Treize to win

BEST BETS:
R3 3. COMMUNITY
R6 2. OAKFIELD EAGLE

BEST VALUE:
R5 6. MIDNIGHT HARRY
