Mountney Keeping An Eye On Weather For Kembla Assignment (Sat)

Trainer Anthony Mountney will be monitoring the weather closely before unleashing the talented Gave Me You in Saturday's Mark Wedesweiler Memorial CG&E Benchmark 64 Handicap (1200m) at Kembla Grange.

Gave Me You has had two solid trials and is drawn the inside for his first-up assignment but Mountney is concerned how wet Illawarra Turf Club's course will end up by race seven on the weekend.

"With the rain we've had the track is going to be a heavy (10) and he is late in the program, has 62kg and has good gate speed so I would imagine he will sit behind the speed," he said.

"During the day it will depend how bad the track cuts up with him being later in the day.

"The owners are always keen to race but the 62kg won't be the big issue it will be if the track cuts up."

Gave Me You has shown plenty of promise in nine career starts.

The five-year-old has won three times and placed on four occasions, including winning both starts last preparation before he was forced into break due to a bleeding incident.

"He has had issues but his preparation has been super and I thought his trial in behind Handle The Truth was great," Mountney said.

"I thought he travelled well under his own steam, he travelled well there behind Keith's (Dryden) horse so I think it puts him right in this race.

"This horse was under no pressure, he worked away from the others and worked up to Handle The Truth under a hold.

"It was a really good trial coming into this and the wet ground doesn't worry me, it's just how much it cuts up."

Gave Me You was rated a $9 chance with TAB on Friday afternoon with Robin Freeman booked to pilot the gelding.

Mountney also has Oblique in the Wedes Mark Hughes Foundation Maiden (1400m) with the son of I Am Invincible still chasing his first victory.

Oblique ($5.50) has four placings from 10 starts and comes into Saturday off a sixth placing behind Airliner over the same trip at Kembla on August 27.

"I was pleased with his last run. I did think about taking him out to 1600m with Peter and Paul (Snowden) as a two-year-old but my concern is the wet track. He is not a lover of wet surfaces.

"He won't carry much weight though." The 3kg claim of Jackson Searle will likely take Oblique's impost down to the probable weight of 54kg.

Kembla Grange is currently rated a Soft 6.
