Kerrin McEvoy Off To Wyong For Just One Ride (Thursday)

By Gary Harley

Champion jockey Kerrin McEvoy only has the one ride at Thursday’s Wyong race meeting and he has bright prospects of leaving the Central Coast a winner.

McEvoy’s mount is Sniper Legend ($2.90 favourite on TAB) a rising 3yo that will contest the 1100m Wyong Gold Cup September 3 Benchmark 64 Handicap.

The gelding is raced by Hong Kong businessman Bon Ho and trained by talented Hawkesbury horseman Matthew Vella. McEvoy won last year's The Everest on Classique Legend for Bon Ho and he rides most of Ho’s horses when available.

Sniper Legend is pretty quick and is in very good form, however, the wide barrier is a negative. The son of Capitalist has only had three starts and McEvoy’s only ride on him was in a Wyong 2yo maiden in January.

Normally a fast beginner with natural speed Sniper Legend, was slow away at Wyong and his performance to finish second behind Delexo was full of merit. The 3yo has had two runs this preparation and Jason Collett has been aboard both times.

On a heavy track first-up at Hawkesbury he led all the way and bolted in on June 22. Last start at Gosford he led in the straight and was ran down late by Cueillir.

Rachel King has six mounts at Wyong and most of them have strong claims. On Her Word ($4.80), Contamination ($6) and River Tycoon ($2.70) appear her top three rides.

RACE 1, TAB.COM.AU MAIDEN PLATE, 1100M: Rockamo ($2.60 fav) is a Kiwi starting in Australia for the first time. Trained outside Singleton by Aleacia Bennett, the 4yo has had two New Zealand starts and finished close up in both. His last start was at Otaki on March 10 when placed and he was not extended in an easy Muswellbrook trial win recently. Em Cee Gee ($3.80) missed the start by four lengths when placed at Gosford last start. Rubielie ($3.40) hasn’t won in 12 starts but has a chance here.
SELECTIONS: 2 ROCKAMO, 3 EM CEE GEE, 7 RUBIELIE

RACE 2, SKY RACING MAIDEN HANDICAP, 1350M: Dizzy Dawn ($10) will be close to double figure odds but she is capable of an upset. The mare has only been placed twice in her career and both were on this track. She will be fitter now in her third run this prep. River Tycoon ($2.70) was narrowly beaten two starts back on this track and Mister Ripley ($2.40 fav) is ultra-consistent.
SELECTIONS: 3 DIZZY DAWN, 1 RIVER TYCOON, 6 MISTER RIPLEY

RACE 3, RYAN’S METAL ROOFING MAIDEN HANDICAP, 1600M: It is a very open race, however, the Godolphin filly Contamination ($6) has her chance to break through at her sixth start. The filly ran on strong when runner-up at Goulburn last start and she was placed on this track in June. Kouklara ($3.40 fav) was narrowly beaten at Goulburn last start and she has been placed at Canterbury. Who Fancies You ($6) was less than a length from the winner at Nowra last start.
SELECTIONS: 5 CONTAMINATION, 4 KOUKLARA, 7 WHO FANCIES YOU

RACE 4, DE BORTOLI WINES MAIDEN PLATE, 1350M: Chris Waller has three runners here and a trifecta is on the cards. Cat D’Oro ($3.70) had four metropolitan track placings last prep and he is fitter after a first-up fifth on the Kensington Track. He was beaten first-up but he was a long way back and got on heels late and wasn’t tested late. The 3yo has the rails barrier and Josh Parr. Barrichello ($2.70 fav) has been placed in all three starts on city tracks this prep and he has a soft draw. Apollate ($19) can improve on the first-up run.
SELECTIONS: 3 CAT D’ORO, 2 BARRICHELLO, 1 APOLLATE

RACE 5, GREAT NORTHERN CLASS 1 HANDICAP, 1200M: On Her Word ($4.80) has been placed in both starts this preparation and she is ready to win. She was runner up in driving rain at Gosford last start and she likes a soft track. Rachel King has the mount and she has ridden the mare in the past. Day Performer ($8) bolted in on this track last start and she is a front runner. Light Up My World ($9.50) won by 5 lengths on this track two starts back.
SELECTIONS: 3 ON HER WORD, 6 DAY PERFORMER, 2 LIGHT UP MY WORLD

RACE 6, CARLTON WYONG GOLD CUP SEPTEMBER 3 B/M 64, 1100M: Sniper Legend ($2.90 fav) has speed to burn and McEvoy makes the trip for one ride. He led all the way and bolted in at Hawkesbury first-up and last start he was run down late at Gosford. It is a talented field and he has drawn wide but he is smart. Agrum ($3.60) has only had two starts for a 3½-length Gosford win and a very close second at Newcastle. Ready To Soar ($7.50) has a good record and should run well.
SELECTIONS: 9 SNIPER LEGEND, 2 AGRUM, 1 READY TO SOAR

RACE 7, HAPPY BIRTHDAY GRANT PIDGEON B/M 68, 1600M: Silent Agenda ($3.70 fav) is racing well with runner-up performances in two of his past three starts on the Kensington Track and Warwick Farm. He came from well back when beaten a length on the Kenso on July 21. He was beaten less than a length at Warwick Farm on June 30. The 5yo has drawn well and Tim Clark rides. Ocean Go ($12) will drift back and run on while Edge Of Darkness ($6.50) is in good form.
SELECTIONS: 4 SILENT AGENDA, 7 OCEAN GO, 8 EDGE OF DARKNESS

RACE 8, WYONG’S NEXT RACE MEETING AUGUST 29 B/M 64, 1350M: Anotherthinkcomin’ ($12) won a Wyong maiden by a big space in January and next start he was beaten half a length at Gosford. He trialled well at Rosehill recently and is the likely leader. Big Surprise ($6.50) is in career-best form and Vanilla Sky ($10) won well last start.
SELECTIONS: 5 ANOTHERTHINKCOMIN’, 2 BIG SURPRISE, 12 VANILLA SKY
