John Schell's Tips For Kembla Grange (Saturday, Provincial-Midway Championships)

By John Schell

Selections based on a heavy track

Race 1 - 1:10PM BARRY VANDENBERGH 80TH BIRTHDAY MIDWAY 3YO CLASS 1 (1000M)

10. Siovy Dane was a good last start winner on a heavy track at Nowra when leading throughout. She only needs to run up to that effort to be rated one of the hardest to beat again in this line-up.

Dangers: 1. Mr Midnight hit the line well when resuming with a strong win on a soft track at Newcastle. He’s drawn well here and can go on with the job. 7. Lulumon resumes from a spell here and has solid form on rain affected tracks. 2. Fludway has been racing well enough of late to give this a shake.

How to play it: Siovy Dane EACH WAY.

Race 2 - 1:45PM JOHN BAXTER 76TH BIRTHDAY CG&E MAIDEN PLATE (1400 METRES)

2. Summons is resuming from a spell here for a new trainer in the shape of Jarrod Austin. He’s had two recent trials and looks ready to be near his best for this and his form in his five-start career looks good enough to give this a shake.

Dangers: 7. Dunedin has only had two starts either side of a spell and has shown enough talent to be a factor here. 1. Lonhanova has been placed in his latest two starts and should be thereabouts again here. 5. Dolzino is better for one run back from a spell.

How to play it: Summons WIN.

Race 3 - 2:20PM ABAX F&M MAIDEN PLATE (1400 METRES)

4. Glebe is resuming from a spell here and has had two trials in preparation. She had two starts late last year and finished second in the latest of them at Gosford before the break. She is primed to return a winner here.

Dangers: 5. Investment was spelled after a down the track effort on debut at Warwick Farm. She had two trials before resuming with a fourth at Newcastle and she should be better for that run. 6. Joint Mission didn’t do much in three starts last year but resumes here and is a recent trial winner. Improvement is expected. 2. Mosca Luna wasn’t disgraced when resuming and can run into the placings here.

How to play it: Glebe WIN.

Race 4 - 3:00PM VALE CLIFF CLARE PROVINCIAL CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

7. Hasty Honey was a winner at Newcastle before being spelled then had two trials before resuming with a fifth behind a handy one at Scone when making far from disgraced. She strips fitter for this and a forward showing is on the cards.

Dangers: 6. Luskaire ran second at Newcastle on debut then followed that up with a strong win at Tamworth when starting as an odds-on favourite. He has the talent to give this a shake. 5. Cool And Calm didn’t do a lot in his first three starts before being spelled. He had a couple of solid trials before resuming with a strong win at this track and has claims again. 10. Lease looks the best of the rest in a race decimated by scratchings.

How to play it: Hasty Honey WIN.

Race 5 - 3:40PM VALE HAROLD LIGHT SUPER MAIDEN HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

2. Star Act had five starts last season and was placed in a couple of Canterbury runs before running well enough in two starts in Brisbane before being spelled. She’s had two trials in preparation for this return and won the latest o them in good style.

Dangers: 1. The New Sinatra has only had two starts and has been placed in both of them at Gosford and Newcastle. He’s shown enough ability to be rated a leading chance here. 9. Slinky resumed from a spell with a second at Canberra and can be placed again with a repeat of that, while 8. Monte Braveheart wasn’t disgraced when resuming at this track and is worth some thought again.

How to play it: Star Act WIN.

Race 6 - 4:20PM MELINDA GRIFFITHS LAWYERS F&M BM64 HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

2. Time Bandit has won her latest two starts at Nowra and Orange and while this is harder, she is racing well enough to give plenty of cheek.

Dangers: 5. Layin’ Four won a couple on end at Hawkesbury and this track before a last start fourth at Gosford. She should run well again here. 10. Cosmos is resuming from a spell but has solid enough form and ran well behind Red Card in a recent trial. 8. Dark Glitter has run well enough in tougher grade in her latest two starts and will find this a better assignment.

How to play it: Time Bandit WIN.

Race 7 - 5:00PM DEAN GROUP CG&E BENCHMARK 64 HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

6. Briasa was on debut at this track when hitting the line well to score impressively as favourite earlier this month. He’s drawn well in this and can maintain the unbeaten record.

Dangers: 9. Headley Grange resumed from a spell with a win at this track at his first start for a new stable and can go on with the job having now won two of his four starts. 3. Headstock was midfield in a Provincial-Midway Championships Qualifier at Hawkesbury last time out and this is a much easier task for him, although he still needs to lift on his previous form. 10. Lady Shenanigans has been running well in tougher city grade events and is worth including among the main chances.

How to play it: Briasa WIN

Race 8 - 5:40PM POLYTRACK PROVINCIAL-MIDWAY CHAMPIONSHIPS QUAL. (1400M)

1. Cloudland is a classy performer on his day and won a couple of city races towards the end of last campaign as well as finishing a close second in another. Resumed with a solid third at this track in similar grade behind subsequent Ajax Stakes runner-up Territory Express and that form looks strong for this. Should be very hard to hold out.

Dangers: 3. Ruby Flyer hit winning form midway through last year when scoring at Wyong and Hawkesbury before following a failure at Warwick Farm with more success at Newcastle and Warwick Farm. Was placed in the Rowley Mile before being spelled and has had a couple of trials in preparation for this. Has bright each-way claims. 11. Victory Lane has shown his share of ability and followed a safely held effort in the Four Pillars last spring with a Midway win at this track on the day of The Gong. He since resumed with a solid fourth here behind Territory Express in similar grade and he can show up in the placings here. 12. Tavs hit the line well to score by a big margin at this track in January then stepped up to this grade and wasn’t beaten far when fifth behind Territory Express at his latest start. He’s a three-year-old taking on the older horses but has the talent to give this a shake.

How to play it: Cloudland EACH WAY.

Best Bets:
Race 1 (10) Siovy Dane.
Race 5 (2) Star Act.

Best Value:
Race 8 (1) Cloudland.
