Freedman Desires Handy Debut From Winx's Sibling (Hawkesbury Sunday)

By John Schell

A filly with the same dam as Winx headlines the Sunday meeting at Hawkesbury with the Michael Freedman prepared Wings Of Desire set to contest the Cabac – Hager F&M Maiden Plate (1100m).

Wings Of Desire is the last foal out of Winx’s mother, Vegas Showgirl, and will race in the colours of owner/breeder John Camilleri’s Fairway Thoroughbreds.

Wings Of Desire had a barrier trial at Randwick earlier in the year and failed to beat a runner home in that, and has had a further two trials over the last month for a second at Randwick and a win at Rosehill.

“She’s a big filly,” Freedman said of the two-year-old daughter of Pride Of Dubai.

“She’s needed a barrier extension and blanket in her last two trials and we’ll go with that again on race day.”

Wings Of Desire wins a Rosehill trial on July 12

Tommy Berry was aboard Wings Of Desire in her February trial and again in her Randwick trial last month when finishing second. He will stick with her in the Hawkesbury event.

“She looks like she has her share of ability,” said Freedman.

“She has to come out and do it on race day but all indications are good at this stage so we are hopeful of a good showing.”

Berry only has four rides at the Hawkesbury meeting, with two for the Peter and Paul Snowden stable and the remaining mount being for Edward Cummings.

The jockey will ride Coast Guard for the Snowdens in the Schneider – App Maiden Plate (1500m) along with stablemate After Match in the Sal C,G&E Maiden Plate (1100m).

Torie’s Rose will represent Cummings in the Klein Tools – Ipd Provincial Maiden Handicap (1300m).

Coast Guard has had two starts for a ninth on debut at Scone before a last start third at the same track behind Presides.

Berry will be having his first race ride on the gelding at Hawkesbury. After Match had two trials earlier in the year, including one in which Berry rode him to victory, before debuting with a fifth. He resumes on Sunday after another three trials.

Torie’s Rose is resuming from a spell and has been placed in two of her six starts.
