In-form galloper Red Cobra has earned a break but not before he gets his chance to end a profitable campaign on a high note in Thursday's Canadian Club Provincial Class 1 Handicap (1600m) at Kembla Grange.
Red Cobra got his maiden out of the way two starts ago after a run of three straight seconds and trainer Damien Lane believes he's capable of snaring another win when he lines up alongside stablemate Really Motivated.
"His whole preparation has been really good," Lane said.
"He will go for a break after Thursday. He has done enough and will go out and have a break.
"The big track will suit him and hopefully he can get a good tempo.
"Anna (Roper) rides him everyday and has ridden him really well all preparation so it would be nice to knock another win off with him."
Red Cobra was a beaten favourite when he lined up last start alongside stablemate Really Motivated in a mile event at Wyong last month.
The son of Sebring failed to beat a runner but had a legitimate excuse after being forced to pan widest on the turn from last in a leader dominated race.
"They just walked," Lane said. "Really Motivated sat outside and the leader was just too good but she ran well.
"Red Cobra was no hope from where he was in that field."
Really Motivated has come through well after sticking on strongly behind the winner Justela. The Real Impact mare has been battle hardened by the experience and is ready to peak fourth-up from a spell.
"She was sort of undone the other day as well but she has come on from that fitness wise," Lane said. "She is at her peak fitness wise now but is drawn a bit sticky.
"She is better suited on well tracks but the trouble with wet tracks at this time of year, you have to be lucky and it has to rain on the day or the night before otherwise they dry out.
"I thought she did run really well on the dry the other day so she can do it but is better suited."
Red Cobra is a $6.50 chance while Really Motivated is a $9 contender with Recce Jones booked to ride.
The talented duo take on a competitive field that includes Kristen Buchanan's strong last start winner Fioprospero ($3.40 favourite), local galloper Brave Agenda ($4) and Brad Widdup's Gazumped ($4.80).
