Rosehill Gardens hosts the third richest thoroughbred race in Australia this Saturday as Sydney’s west joins the spectacular Everest Carnival for its own celebration in front of a capacity 10,000 spectators.

The third running of the $7.5 million XXXX Golden Eagle has attracted a full field of 18 runners from across Australia, New Zealand and the northern hemisphere – the highlight of a huge 10-race card.

Some general admission tickets remain available for Saturday’s meeting with just a limited number of hospitality packages also remaining at the COVID-Safe meeting.

Australian Turf Club Chief Executive, Jamie Barkley said Sydney’s West was ready to join a celebration of the city’s spring racing carnival: “Following two sold-out Saturdays at Royal Randwick with the return of spectators, we are thrilled to open the gates to Western Sydney to celebrate more world-class racing," Mr Barkley said.

“Rosehill Gardens and the XXXX Golden Eagle are an integral part of Sydney’s innovative and growing spring racing carnival as our city continues to open up."

In a highly competitive betting race, Group 1 winner I’m Thunderstruck from the Melbourne stable of Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr and for champion Sydney jockey Hugh Bowman is the opening $4.50-$4.60 TAB favourite in the $7.5 million XXXX Golden Eagle.

Private Eye – a last start winner of the Group 1 TAB Epsom – is a firm $6 TAB second favourite for Warwick Farm trainer Joe Pride and jockey Nash Rawiller. Apache Chase – from the Brisbane yard of Desleigh Forster and top Queensland jockey Jim Byrne – is next in betting at $9, one of just three runners under double TAB figures in one of the betting races of the spring.

The 18-horse field includes six individual Group 1 winners and three international runners recently arrived from the Northern Hemisphere – Maximal ($11-$13 - John O’Shea and Alysha Collett), Laws Of Indices ($15-$17 - Annabel Neasham and Tommy Berry) and Reve De Vol ($26-$34 - Annabel Neasham and Brodie Loy).

Australian Turf Club Executive General Manager Racing and Wagering, James Ross said the XXXX Golden Eagle was again high on quality: “In just two renewals the $7.5 million XXXX Golden Eagle has not only featured but produced a number of Group 1 performers and this year’s field is another high-quality running," Mr Ross said.

“It is especially pleasing to see the race draw horses from across NSW, Victoria, Queensland and New Zealand and attract added international interest with three former European-trained runners, as the race quickly builds in stature in the Sydney spring.

“This raceday continues to grow as its own feature program in the Sydney spring and with added prizemoney bonuses on offer this Saturday in the Classique Legend Stakes and Kypreos Group Rosehill Gold Cup."

The $1 million Classique Legend Stakes has attracted another big field – 16 runners – including six horses who ran in this month’s $15 million TAB Everest. TAB Everest runner-up Masked Crusader has opened a $3.10-$3.20 TAB favourite for Hawkes Racing and jockey Tommy Berry, ahead of a strongly supported Eduardo ($6-$4.80) for trainer Joe Pride and jockey Nash Rawiller, off a third placing in the TAB Everest.

They dominate early betting from Big Parade ($8-$8.50) trained by Mark Newnham and ridden by Josh Parr.

TAB Everest runners Lost and Running ($11-$10 - John O’Shea and Hugh Bowman), Gytrash ($11-$12 - Gordon Richards/Damien Moyle and jockey Jason Collett), Trekking ($15-$16 - James Cummings) and Libertini ($26 - Anthony Cummings and Robbie Dolan) are among six horses chasing a $750,000 bonus if they win.

Horses who ran in the TAB Everest and who then win the Classique Legend Stakes receive the bonus.

The $750,000 Kypreos Group Rosehill Gold Cup features Think It Over ($2.80 favourite) for Kembla Grange trainer Kerry Parker and jockey Nash Rawiller. The horse is chasing a $1 million bonus of its own after winning the Hill Stakes at his previous start and if he is victorious again on Saturday.

Gold Trip for trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace and jockey Tim Clark has been heavily backed early ($4.60-$3.90).

Saturday also sees the inaugural running of the $700,000 The Four Pillars – another addition to Sydney’s $50 million Everest Carnival. The 18 horses in the field are running for slot owners who will share prizemoney with the owners and trainers of horses competing on Saturday.
