Warwick Farm Winners - Tips For Wednesday 9th August

By Ray Hickson

Tips and race by race preview by Ray Hickson for Wednesday’s Warwick Farm meeting. Selections based on a good track.

Race 1 - 1:25PM FURPHY HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

6. Carrazana has looked a promising horse in his two trials and particularly in the latest which was last week at Canterbury. It’ll be interesting to see how he handles barrier one but on what he’s shown he’s looked a coming winner and should run well.

Dangers: 2. Gelatin has been freshened up since an unlucky third behind Tutta La Vita over 1400m at Rosehill back in June. Not asked for anything in his recent trial and he bears close watching here. 1. Encap arguably should have won first-up at Warwick Farm, he was badly held up at a vital stage and once clear he exploded to the line to just miss. The winner was beaten in a Midway at the weekend but the 1200m should suit and he’s a threat. 3. Les Vampires was quite wayward in the straight on debut when an odds-on favourite at Canterbury two weeks ago. Will have learned from that and he’ll go forward from the wide gate. Definite chance.

How to play it: Carrazana WIN ($3.70 TAB Fixed Odds).

Race 2 - 2:00PM KIA ORA FARNAN HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

4. Outsider showed a return to form with a strong finish to run second over this course a few week ago. Down in grade for this, drawn well, leading rider engaged. She has plenty going for her and should be in the finish.

Dangers: 1. Don Pedro also drops in grade and quite significantly after a disappointing showing in a BM78 at Randwick. Was runner-up in that grade prior at Rosehill and while up sharply in weight he’s entitled to be competitive. 6. Sir Bailey had support at his switch to Sydney when a close third at Canterbury two weeks ago. Did have every chance in the run but likely to have the same here so must be included. 3. Cabaca resumed with a popular win at Doomben and has earned a return to Sydney where she was competitive last time in. Each-way claims.

How to play it: Outsider WIN ($3.40 TAB Fixed Odds).

Race 3 - 2:35PM ALL TOO HARD @ VINERY STUD HANDICAP (2200 METRES)

6. Awesome Wonder was quite unlucky not to win at Sandown two weeks ago when badly held up while the winner skipped away. Better for that run at the staying trip this time in and if she can back it up she’s a good chance to go one better.

Dangers: 7. Okataina is a chance to get some on pace favours here and if that’s the case he’ll be hard to run down. Just found one better in a BM64 over this sort of trip last time and is down 2kg. Take catching. 1. New Republic continues to race well and he consolidated his Canterbury win with a game second at Kensington last week. Up in trip but hard to see him not featuring somewhere. 5. Chateaux Park has a good Warwick Farm record and hit the line nicely in a return to form when third at Canterbury fourth-up. Bobs up now and then and wouldn’t shock if he runs into a place.

How to play it: Awesome Wonder WIN ($3.90 TAB Fixed Odds).

Race 4 - 3:10PM MICROPHONE @ DARLEY HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

See no reason why 3. Smokeshow can’t be in the finish of what is an open race. It’s been a little while since her trial but it was a strong heat and she’s proven fresh over the short course. If she’s within range at the 200m she can go close.

Dangers: 5. Secaution won first-up last prep on a heavy track then backed it up with a handy effort on good ground at Newcastle. Cruised to the line nicely in her trial and she looks dangerous first-up. 1. Xtravagant Star is now with the Maher/Eustace team and it’ll be interesting to see if she can find her best. Won her first two starts including the Inglis Millennium but last time was beaten in a BM68 at Morphettville. Trials have been fine. Check betting. 6. Sweet Baby Boom is another query runner, she hasn’t raced since winning on heavy track at Canterbury in April last year. Fitter for a couple of recent trials and is another market and yard watch.

How to play it: Smokeshow E/W ($8.50 TAB Fixed Odds).

Race 5 - 3:45PM RANVET HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

3. Real Peace is racing very well of late and is due for a change of luck. Big effort off a wide gate in a Midway recently and just failed here prior to that. Drawn a lot better and is a good each-way chance if he can get the breaks.

Dangers: 4. Lolly Yeats improved nicely second-up to be narrowly beaten at Canterbury two weeks ago. No harder here and drawn to have her chance again so expect her to be competitive. 8. The Replicant is racing consistently but finding it a little hard to win. Tried hard when beaten under a length at Kensington last week and is sure to be running on again. 5. Mr Bond has been freshened up since a midfield finish in a similar race here at the end of June. May well want slightly further but gets a soft draw and on his best efforts he could upset them.

How to play it: Real Peace E/W ($6.50 TAB Fixed Odds).

Real Peace runs fourth at Randwick on July 29

Race 6 - 4:20PM PRECISE AIR HANDICAP (1300 METRES)

2. Ottilie returns to the scene of her runaway win here at the end of June and strikes a race where she could easily repeat the dose. Reeled in at Randwick last time when well backed but held on well and drops in grade. The one to catch.

Dangers: 9. Marquess has trialled up well for a first-up run since winning twice at the end of last prep almost a year ago. Imagine he will be dictated to by the barrier draw and concede a start but have to respect. 4. Charlemagne ran up to his good country and provincial form with a close fourth, and a shade unlucky not to place, here three weeks ago. Will get back and be running on again. 5. Different Strokes made a pleasing return in a Midway at Rosehill and while not so well drawn here he does have the tactical speed to offset the gate to a degree. Each-way.

How to play it: Ottilie WIN ($3.30 TAB Fixed Odds).

Race 7 - 4:55PM TAB HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

9. Our Kobison is an up and comer and couldn’t have been more impressive in his on pace win at Newcastle second-up. Sat outside the lead and dominated there. Should find a similar spot in running and this is a step he should be able to take.

Dangers: 4. Secret Revolution was held up for a run in a similar race a few weeks back when favourite and hit the line hard when clear, but the race was over. Will need to find the right back to follow from an outside gate but he’ll be strong late if they overdo it. 6. Boss won that race after skipping away on the turn and while up 3kg has the gate to attempt a repeat. No reason why he won’t run well again. 7. Bundeena will find 1000m short of his best but he did start last prep with two five length wins in easier grade. One to keep an eye on.

How to play it: Our Kobison WIN ($2.80 TAB Fixed Odds).
