Racing NSW has been informed of the passing of Dr Alan Duffield who died in hospital last week.
“I am very saddened to hear of Alan’s passing,” said Mr Peter V’landys AM, Racing NSW’s Chief Executive. “Alan was an absolute gentleman and a beautiful human being.
“He was also an extraordinary employee, and our thoughts are with Alan’s family and friends.”
Dr Duffield was the Official Analyst with the Australian Racing Forensic Laboratory between 1989 and 1999.
He introduced the technique of mass spectrometry to the Australian Jockey Club laboratory in the early 1990s which was a quantum leap in drug detection capabilities.
With funding provided by the AJC, Alan’s strategy commissioning this equipment provided immediate results with a suite of first-time drug detections notably the potent ‘go fast’ narcotic palfium in 1989.
He also detected the ‘go slow’ beta-blocker timolol in three beaten favourites at Sydney over the Christmas-New Year period in 1989-90, working in close collaboration with the Veterinary Department and world first detections of the anabolic steroids stanozolol and methandriol in 1995 and trenbolone metabolite in 1999.
