Sydney’s biggest feature summer raceday and the running of the $2m Group 2-The Ingham is the focus of a 10-race card at Royal Randwick this Saturday.
The third running of the $2m The Ingham is part of a major fundraising raceday in partnership between Australian Turf Club and the Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research and the Ingham family.
The Ingham Day honours global icons of horse racing Mr Bob Ingham AO and Mr Jack Ingham AO and raises funds and awareness for the Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research.
The 10-race card with a bumper 160 acceptors includes the $500,000 Listed-Inglis Nursery for two-year-olds.
Both feature races carry extra importance – The Ingham winner gains ballot exemption from the $4m Gr 1-Doncaster Mile in the autumn while prizemoney from the Inglis Nursery (equal to a metropolitan race) is added to the prizemoney order of entry for the $5m Gr 1-TAB Golden Slipper.
Australian Turf Club Chief Executive, Matt Galanos said the Ingham family – including patriarchs Jack and Bob – had been massive supporters of racing as well as charity over many decades.
“We are proud to again join on Sydney’s biggest summer day of racing with the Ingham family and the amazing work the institute does to raise funds for the treatment of cancer," Mr Galanos said.
“The Ingham family have been household names in racing and with Racing NSW we are thrilled to partner for this $2 million feature."
Saturday will see an official function in the Royal Randwick Ballroom and an opportunity around the track to raise funds.
A collaboration between the Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research (IIAMR) and South Western Sydney Local Health District (SWSLHD), the Australian Centre for Cancer Equity (AcCE) has outlined three key research areas:
– Responsive and Accessible Health Systems
– Prevention, Early Detection and Screening
– Personalised Care and Precision Medicine
Institute Board Director, John Ingham said: “The Ingham Charity Raceday and luncheon builds on Jack and Bob Ingham AO’s philanthropic values.
“This year, we are raising vital funds towards the establishment of the Australian Centre for Cancer Equity at Ingham Institute for Applied Medical Research.
“Cancer is a disease that can affect everyone, but the same treatment options are not available to everyone.
“By supporting this event, we can help Ingham Institute’s researchers achieve healthcare equity for all Australians."
The $2m The Ingham has attracted a capacity field of 20 runners plus four emergencies, with $11-plus earner Private Eye ($9.50 on TAB) topweight for trainer Joe Pride and jockey Nash Rawiller.
The $3.80 TAB favourite is Gringotts for Ciaron Maher and Tommy Berry, a winner of The Big Dance and The Gong, and aiming for a remarkable treble of 1600m feature wins.
The next horse in betting is last start Group 1 winner Port Lockroy ($9) for jockey Tyler Schiller and trainers Annabel Neasham & Rob Archibald, and I’mintowin ($9.50) on a seven-day back up for trainers Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott and jockey Winona Costin.
Saturday is the 16th running of The Inglis Nursery – a race which boasts an honour roll of exceptional youngsters such as Wild Ruler, She Will Reign, Extreme Choice and Mossfun in recent years. The $2.80 TAB favourite is Within The Law for trainer Bjorn Baker and jockey Jason Collett
Saturday also sees other black type races on the card including the $200,000 Listed-Racing and Sports Razor Sharp and $200,000 Listed-Max Brenner Christmas Cup.
