Sydney's Summer Festival Of Racing Heats Up At Rosehill Gardens

Australian Turf Club’s Summer Festival of Racing starts at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday  with the Group 3 $200,000 Furphy Festival Stakes the headline event of a strong black type meeting.

Saturday’s 10-race card with a bumper 158 acceptances also features The Listed $160,000 Drinkwise Starlight Stakes, Listed $160,000 Elite Sand and Soil Cup and a capacity field of 18 runners and four emergencies in the $150,000 TAB Country Classic from stables across NSW.

A 15-horse field has accepted for the Furphy Festival Stakes – a key pathway to Sydney’s feature race of summer – the Group 2 $2 million The Ingham Stakes at Royal Randwick. The winner of Saturday’s feature gains entry and is exempt from ballot into the The Ingham Stakes on 10 December.

Australian Turf Club Executive General Manager Racing and Wagering, James Ross said Saturday’s meeting began Sydney’s enhanced summer program of racing.

“Following such a successful spring carnival it is very pleasing to see such strong numbers of nominations as we head towards races such as the [$2 million] The Ingham and staying features including the Summer Cup and Christmas Cup," Mr Ross said.

Last year’s Festival Stakes was taken out by Ellsberg who went on to win this spring’s $1.5m Group 1 TAB Epsom along with the inaugural running of the $2m Five Diamonds.

Early favourite for the Furphy Festival Stakes at $5.50 on TAB is Mirra Vision for trainers Peter & Paul Snowden and jockey Josh Parr ahead of Kiss Sum ($6) trained by Tracey Bartley for jockey Kerrin McEvoy. Coal Crusher trained by Joe Pride and with jockey Glyn Schofield is next at $6.50.

In another wide-open betting race, Dragonstone for trainer Mark Newnham and jockey Tommy Sherry is a $5 TAB favourite in the Drinkwise Starlight Stakes ahead of Najmaty (Peter and Paul Snowden/Kerri McEvoy) at $7 and Fox Fighter (David Payne/Jay Ford) at $7.
