Rothfire Hot Favourite For High-Class De Bortoli Wines Golden Rose

The Group 1 $1 million De Bortoli Wines Golden Rose – one of Australia’s most sought-after races for three-year-olds – brings Sydney’s Everest Carnival spotlight to Rosehill Gardens this Saturday on an outstanding card of racing.

Will Rothfire the hot $1.95 TAB favourite add to his Group 1 tally and further cement his place at the top of markets for the $15 TAB Everest?

Can Hawkes Racing’s colts North Pacific ($5.50; jockey James McDonald) and Ole Kirk ($8.50 TAB; Tommy Berry) turn the tables on the favourite as they step up to the 1400m journey?

Or will trainer Gerald Ryan win his second De Bortoli Wines Golden Rose in just four years with his colt Peltzer ($7; Kerrin McEvoy)? These four horses at the top of TAB markets provide just some of the storylines for the second week of Sydney’s spectacular $41 million Everest Carnival.

The De Bortoli Wines Golden Rose field includes dual Group 1 winner King’s Legacy ($15), trained by Peter and Paul Snowden and ridden by Hugh Bowman, who is looking for his sixth win in the race. Trainer John Thompson and jockey Nash Rawiller are looking for their first Golden Rose with Mamaragan ($14).

Sydney’s 10-time champion trainer Chris Waller saddles up two runners – Global Quest ($23) with jockey Brenton Avdulla and Sauvestre ($61) for jockey Glen Boss. And Yardstick ($51; Tim Clark) for the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott training team rounds out an exceptional field as they too look to win the race for the first time.

Australian Turf Club Executive General Manager of Racing and Wagering, James Ross said the De Bortoli Wines Golden Rose had again attracted some of the best three-year-olds in Australia.

“This race continues to grow in stature as a stallion-making race in such a short period and sits perfectly on the racing calendar,” Mr Ross said. “Last year’s winner Bivouac went on to further Group 1 success, runner up Yes Yes Yes won the TAB Everest and third placegetter Exceedance won a coveted Group 1 at his next start.

“This year’s field is again stacked with great quality on a program which includes four other Group races.”

The Group 2 $400,000 KIA Golden Pendant sees the Chris Waller-trained and James McDonald mare Haut Brion Her open a $2.40 avourite. She has had nine starts for six wins and three seconds.

The trainer Les Bridge and jockey Kerrin McEvoy combination are looking to take out another big Everest Carnival race, this time on Saturday with Seasons ($8.50).

The Group 2 $200,000 Iron Jack Shannon Stakes sees former UK galloper I Am Superman – a horse who remained in Australia after running in the inaugural Golden Eagle – open a $3.80 favourite (Peter and Paul Snowden and jockey Kerrin McEvoy).

In what shapes as a strong betting race, Just Thinkin for the Waterhouse/Bott and Tim Clark team is a $5 second favourite ahead of Looks Like Elvis ($7) for Warwick Farm trainer Jarrod Austin and jockey Jason Collett.

The Group 3 $200,000 Precise Air Gloaming Stakes for the 3yo middle-distance horses and Group 3 $160,000 JRA Colin Stephen Quality for the stayers provide further black type on a card which has attracted 118 runners.

The track was rated a Good 4 on Thursday morning with the rail back in the true position for Rosehill Gardens’ Group 1 race of the Everest Carnival. For all racing, ticketing and general information go to theraces.com.au
