A record number of second acceptors are in the running for the Group 1 $5 million Longines Golden Slipper with just 57 days until the 67th renewal of the iconic event at Rosehill Gardens.
A total of 440 horses remain entered for the Australian Turf Club’s signature race, the world’s richest race for two-year-olds to be run on Saturday 18 March.
This number is a strong increase on last year’s 355 second acceptors (up 22%) and smashes the previous joint record of second acceptors of 384 set in 2019 and 2021 (up 13%).
Australian Turf Club Executive General Manager Racing and Wagering, James Ross said the increase was testament to the pivotal influence of the $5m Longines Golden Slipper on the Australian racing and breeding industry.
“The Longines Golden Slipper stands alone in world racing and this year’s record number of second acceptors affirms its pinnacle place in Australian racing history," Mr Ross said.
“With prizemoney now $5 million plus a $1 million bonus on offer from the Australian Turf Club if a horse wins two key pathway races and the Longines Golden Slipper itself, the race continues to grow in stature and influence."
Horses and connections can win the $1 million bonus by winning two of seven selected pathway races at Rosehill Gardens and Royal Randwick and then the Longines Golden Slipper.
The $1m bonus complements a $5m bonus from Racing NSW for any horse which wins the Group 1 Longines Golden Slipper as a two-year-old, the Group 1 Golden Rose at three, and the $10m Golden Eagle at age four.
