Randwick Winners - Tips For Thursday 25th April

By Ray Hickson

Tips and race by race preview by Ray Hickson for Thursday’s Anzac Day meeting at Royal Randwick. Selections based on a good track.

Race 1 – 12:45PM LIGHT HORSE BRIGADE HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

3. Les Amoureux has found a race she can win and though she is short enough. Trapped wide and worked a bit at Warwick Farm off a two month break but from barrier one in the small field here she will have every chance. Entitled to break through.

Dangers: 2. The Golden Bear trialled against open company/Group horses in his second trial and while he was asked to chase there was merit in the way he hit the line late. Kicking off at 1400m suits and he’s worth keeping safe. 1. Regent Street improved with the blinkers on at his second trial again in good company and is another to keep an eye on. No surprise to see him competitive at 1400m on debut. 6. Romantic Whisper might get some control in front here and is fitter for the one run back behind Got Your Six at Newcastle, where she had her chance but appeared to be looking for more ground. Could give a sight.

How to play it: Les Amoureux WIN ($1.90 TAB Fixed Odds).

Les Amoureux runs third at Warwick Farm on April 17

Race 2 - 1:20PM ARMISTICE PLATE (1200 METRES)

13. Tracy May has produced a couple of nice trials and there was plenty to like about her win over Flit at Rosehill where she trucked up behind them and slid through to win going away. Well bred being from the Typhoon Tracy family and should run well on debut.

Dangers: 7. Libertini is the logical horse to beat after her super debut in the Group 3 Kindergarten earlier this month. The only negative is her racing style and she will have to go right back from the outside gate on a 9m rail. Potentially can overcome that but she’s a very short price to find out. Read trainer Anthony Cummings' comments here. 9. Our Girl Sniti has the benefit of race experience and it was a handy debut too at Warwick Farm a month ago. Each-way. 6. Gypsy Snitz showed improvement into her second trial, has the advantage of the inside barrier and could get into the placings on debut.

How to play it: Tracy May E/W ($4.40 TAB Fixed Odds).

Race 3 – 1.55PM BATTLE OF AMIENS PLATE (1200 METRES)

2. Disruptor has the speed to overcome the wide gate being a go forward horse and if he can then he should get away with this one. Nice debut back in the spring on a heavy track and both his trials back have been sharp, particularly the latest. Looks hard to beat. Read trainer Gary Portelli's comments here.

Dangers: 12. Twenty Four Carat caught the eye at his only start back in January getting back and charging at them late. Did something similar in his trial ahead of a return and he’ll likely get back and be running on strongly here. Definite chance. 10. Reloaded has been strong at the end of both his recent trials and is an interesting runner. He’s bred to appreciate a bit more ground, his full brother didn’t win below a mile and only won on soft tracks. That may not mean anything. He’ll likely drift back and have a flashing light on late. 1. Discharged has put in two good trials and one puzzling trial. The latest was a good one and he’s drawn to be on the speed somewhere. Might be a touch of overs.

How to play it: Disruptor WIN ($2.75 TAB Fixed Odds).

Race 4 – 2.30PM BEERSHEBA HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

4. Julkkis is coming through the grades quickly and she overcame some traffic to score at Kembla last start off almost a two month break and coming back to 1400m. Mile suits and shouldn’t be far away in the run. Can take the next step.

Dangers: 7. Wild Impact couldn’t have been more impressive on debut as she raced away over a mile at Newcastle back in September. That was on a wet track but she’s trialled up nicely and this will be a good measuring stick for where she stands. Logical danger. 5. Lady Evelyn did enough first-up earlier this month to suggest she can improve up to a mile. Beaten just under four lengths but the last 100m was good work and she’s down 3kg after the claim. Wouldn’t shock if she happened to win. 1. Maddison Avenue is the likely leader and comes off an upset win at Sandown two weeks ago. Others may be more progressive than her but she’s hard to leave out given where she’ll be in the run.

How to play it: Julkkis WIN ($2.90 TAB Fixed Odds).

Julkkis wins at Kembla Grange on April 6

Race 5 – 3.10PM ANZAC DAY CUP (1800 METRES)

1. Hogmanay seems to be working up to a win and he closed in late beaten just over a length over a mile at Gosford third-up from a long spell. He ran the fastest last 600m of 36.13 and 200m of 12.24 (Punter's Intelligence) so he's heading the right way. Last win was over this course and he should get last look at them from just off the pace. No good thing but a good chance.

Dangers: 3. White Boots just doesn’t run a bad race and he toughed it out when challenged to win at Gosford two weeks ago, same race as Hogmanay. Slightly worse off at the weights but his consistency overrides stats. Will run well. 5. Milseain has found her form leading with wins at her last two starts including this trip on the Kensington track last time out. Down another 2.5kg for the claim and class rise and is sure to be competitive again. 7. Girl Tuesday has been disappointing so far this preparation but if she happens to find her best she’s capable of winning. A month between runs and a trial and a return to good track, if she doesn’t fire it’s safe to say she either hasn’t come up or was over rated.

How to play it: Hogmanay E/W ($6.50 TAB Fixed Odds).

Race 6 - 3:45PM PASSCHENDAELE HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

4. Bare Naked Lady likely beat herself by blowing the start at Wyong first-up but she closed in late and going down a length in a good form race so far is no disgrace, running 33.87 for her last 600m (Punter's Intelligence). If she breaks cleanly she’ll either lead or sit second and is very well in at the weights. Go well.

Dangers: 2. Above And Beyond enjoyed a consistent preparation including three wins over summer and he showed he’s come back well with a strong trial effort recently. Best form has been when he’s led so if he does find the front he will take catching. 3. Reginae is very short considering she had every chance when resuming at Gosford. Granted she had 61kg but she also had a nice run. Fitter and down 2kg are pluses so she can improve. 5. Charretera managed to nail Reginae on the line first-up and Gosford definitely doesn’t seem to be his preferred track. Longer run in suits him and while he probably wants 1400m-mile he’s a definite chance.

How to play it: Bare Naked Lady E/W ($5.00 TAB Fixed Odds).

Bare Naked Lady runs third at Wyong on April 11

Race 7 - 4:20PM BATTLE OF MESSINES HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

4. Kosciusko is an up and comer who looked to do it softly winning at Hawkesbury off a two month break and can only be fitter for that win. Drawn to stalk the leader and if that race fitness comes into play he could be too strong. He’s the right price to find out. Read trainer Pat Webster's comments here.

Dangers: 2. Wolfe is unbeaten after two starts and gets blinkers for the first time after a couple of so-so trials, albeit against good company. He didn’t trial in blinkers. Expect he will look to lead and if he gets complete control he could well be too good. Very short in the betting though. 3. King Hewitt is lightly raced and his only poor run last time in was at a mile on a soft 7. Handy effort when resuming at 1300m in that prep, he’s trialled okay and this isn’t beyond him. 1. Level Eight doesn’t seem to get any of the breaks in his races, only beaten three lengths last time at Warwick Farm in a race with more depth than this and has been placed in more than half of his career to date. So you can’t leave him out.

How to play it: Kosciusko WIN ($4.40 TAB Fixed Odds).

Kosciusko wins at Hawkesbury on April 16

Race 8 - 4:55PM LAST POST HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

13. Legislation is worth a shot each-way at his first run for David Pfieffer. He was costly last prep but he was unlucky first-up and wasn’t disgraced before a spell placing at Canterbury. His trials have been nice and he’s in blinkers first time from a soft draw. If he finds his best he’ll go close.

Dangers: 4. Southern Lad has a good first-up record though he hasn’t started at 1000m previously. Allowed to brush home in his first trial then restrained out to last in his second. He’ll be strong late and if it’s not too short he’s a big chance. 12. Traumatised is probably looking for more than 1000m despite winning fresh at the trip. He had his chance on the Kensington track last time but didn’t quicken, though a fast run race might negate any need for more ground. Rather include than dismiss him. 11. Golden Hits has changed stables and there’s been a bit to like about his two trials. Upset chance.

How to play it: Legislation E/W ($12 TAB Fixed Odds).
