Randwick Winners - Tips For Saturday 16th December

By Ray Hickson

Race 1 - 12:30PM JAMES SQUIRE HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

The two-year-olds kick off and all eyes on 1. Amazing Eagle who made a mess of his rivals in his only public trial earlier this month. Led and opened up in the straight to win by over seven lengths and while he’s only had that one trial it was a strong hitout. It’s up to him now to back it up and put his name in the Magic Millions picture.

Dangers: 7. Skogafoss has the benefit of race experience and he was far from disgraced on debut over 900m at Newcastle in a race run in driving rain. Picked up some good late ground there so with that run under the belt the 1100m now should be ideal. 2. Anode must have taken benefit out of his first trial because he was far more impressive in his second at Rosehill running away from them late. Hard to ignore any Waterhouse/Bott two-year-old and he’s a definite chance. 5. Tardelli ran about a second slower than Amazing Eagle in winning his only trial appearance but his was faster than Anode’s on the same morning. Has gate one and any support would be significant.

How to play it: Amazing Eagle WIN ($1.55 TAB Fixed Odds).

Amazing Eagle wins a Rosehill trial on December 5

Race 2 - 1:05PM MIDWAY HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

The blinkers could do the trick with 5. Cosmic Field who has been a bit hit and miss to date but has some reasonable form around him. Too good second-up at Newcastle when well supported before taking on a Midway and giving away far too much start from the back of the field after drawing the outside. Barrier one and the shades make this a different task and it’s a very winnable Midway.

Dangers: 2. Vegas Outlaw is on a winning streak at the moment and each has been by a decisive margin at the provincials. All four wins so far have come at the mile and no doubt he’s earned his shot in town now. 4. Tympanist caught them napping by taking off before the home turn and he was able to keep going at the 1800m at Kensington second-up. He’s an honest enough customer who will have his chance to put two together. 6. Socrates chased Vegas Outlaw home at Gosford two starts back then sound behind Toesonthenose at Rosehill up in grade. He has form around the major chances so that keeps him in the mix.

How to play it: Cosmic Field WIN ($5.00 TAB Fixed Odds).

Race 3 - 1:40PM KIA ORA PRAGUE HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

2. Cross The Rubicon will need a little luck early but if she can slot in just off the speed this is a nice race for her. Comes through stronger events than this and was 1100m up to this trip when placed behind Lekvarte second-up. It’s been a little while between wins and she will need the breaks but looks a good each-way chance.

Dangers: 10. Zouphoria has come up very short for a horse coming off a maiden win into a Benchmark 78 but there’s a chance she could own this race from the front after drawing soft. 4. Hide Your Heart has found herself a long way back and hit the line when the races have been all over in her past couple since stepping out of midweek company. No Lekvartes in this race and she has a kinder draw. Not to be overlooked. 5. Rocketeer Girl can be forgiven for failing on a heavy track at Kembla third-up. May not get control in front here but should run well up on the pace.

How to play it: Cross The Rubicon EACH-WAY ($7.50 TAB Fixed Odds).

Cross The Rubicon runs third at Rosehill on December 2

Race 4 - 2:15PM TOYOTA FORKLIFTS HANDICAP (2000 METRES)

No reason to sway from 2. Toesonthenose who has been dominant in his past two wins under Nash Rawiller. Did have the advantage of gate one last time but let down nicely when in the clear and it suggests 2000m will be no issue. Will need some cover with the 61kg here but it’s no harder than what he’s been winning of late.

Dangers: 10. Kapakiri is the fresh blood after finding his form in Queensland with easy wins at maiden and BM68 level. It’ll be interesting to see where he lands from gate one after drawing wide in those wins and going back. Toughest test but has to be considered. 11. Lyrical Gangster struck a heavy track when favourite at Kembla Grange on the Gong program and boxed on okay to run third. Have to forgive that, capable of bouncing back with the right back to follow into the race. 6. Iowa could get some on pace favours as the likely leader here and he showed a glimpse of his best with a narrow defeat in the same race at Kembla three weeks ago.

How to play it: Toesonthenose WIN ($3.20 TAB Fixed Odds).

Toesonthenose wins at Rosehill on December 2

Race 5 - 2:50PM TAB HIGHWAY PLATE (1000 METRES)

1. Emperor has the outside barrier here but that’s of little concern at the Randwick 1000m start, what’s more important is getting into a rhythm and finding something to drag him into it. He was dynamic winning a similar race on Big Dance day, was scratched from the Kembla meeting three weeks back so ticked over with a trial win. Dry track suits and he’s the horse to beat.

Dangers: If there’s a danger it’s 13. Acappella Sun who is the other horse very well placed under the Plate conditions of the race, and with the claim. She’s been going around in BM78 company and running well. Probably not in the best part of the track last time and she’s entitled to feature. 2. Blow Dart is often underestimated but he would only have to repeat his effort when runner-up to Emperor last time to be in the finish again. Shade worse off at the weights but has the positive racing pattern. 4. Florino has been freshened up since a failure as favourite in a Highway just under two months ago. No reason uncovered for the flop but he’s trialled well and have to respect his previous efforts.

How to play it: Emperor WIN ($1.75 TAB Fixed Odds).

Emperor wins at Randwick on November 7

Race 6 - 3:25PM TAB HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

10. Boston Rocks has been well found in the market since the fields came out and he might well hold the key to the race as a horse looking like he’s above average. Have to excuse his defeat before a break in an odd race on the Kenso but he looked strong winning twice on the way through. Super trial leading in and drawn well. Has to give a big sight.

Dangers: 6. Union Army returns after an excuse when fourth behind Iowna Merc back in June having bled. Plenty to like about his trial win and he’s come up with gate one. Showed enough through his last prep to say he’s right up to this level. 7. Accredited is another lightly raced type with two wins from three starts and you’d imagine he’s fitter for the first-up win where he was a drifter in betting. Has a negative set up but not prepared to leave him out. 13. Silent Raindrops is racing well in mares company with placings behind Afterlight at her past couple. Gets a weight drop here for the class rise and drawn to get a nice run. She’s consistent and it wouldn’t surprise to see her in the finish somewhere.

How to play it: Boston Rocks WIN ($2.30 TAB Fixed Odds).

Boston Rocks wins a Newcastle trial on November 30

Race 7 - 4:00PM CACTUS IMAGING HANDICAP (1600 METRES)

11. Grebeni enjoyed a nice run to win the Goulburn Cup over Phearson, who has confirmed that form by winning the Festival where Grebeni just couldn’t get into the race from back in the field. Draws to be a bit closer this time and he’s ready for the Randwick mile now. Can bounce back.

Dangers: 6. King Of The Castle is racing in great form and won the Big Dance Wild Card over this course before a game fourth in the $3m feature. He won again at a mile on the Gong program and his two defeats either side have been when up in trip. So he’s not a horse you want to be leaving out back to what looks his pet distance. 15. Naval College is an interesting runner resuming. Fitter for two trials and did nothing wrong at all in five starts last preparation, kicking off over 1800m. With the light weight he's worth throwing in. 2. Kirwans's Lane backs up from a solid effort in The Ingham last week. He's at his best at this trip and while up in weight he's a definite chance.

How to play it: Grebeni WIN ($4.40 TAB Fixed Odds).

Race 8 - 4:40PM PRECISE AIR HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

6. Crafty Eagle will take some beating here if he can get into the right spot early from a tricky gate. He was due to kick off at 1400m but a heavy track caused a change of plan and he resumed at Warwick Farm over 1200m and was warming up late into fourth under 60kg. He’s a promising horse and with even luck should go very close.

Dangers: 11. Louisville was too good in a restricted event at Canterbury first-up then probably just found 1400m too sharp on the Kenso under 60kg but he was charging late there. Has a nice weight drop into this and could easily measure up as the market suggests he might. 8. Plundering is always around the mark and he was gallant when runner-up on the heavy at Kembla last time after looking to struggle early in the straight. Can find an on pace spot here and be there again. 1. Suparazi hit the line well from the back behind Super Helpful at Canberra and with the 3kg claim isn’t badly treated back to BM78 grade. Worth throwing in the mix. Watch for 7. Miracle Spin to run well fresh and wouldn’t shock if 9. Contributingfactor jumps out of the ground second-up.

How to play it: Crafty Eagle WIN ($6.00 TAB Fixed Odds).

Crafty Eagle runs fourth at Warwick Farm on December 6

Race 9 - 5:20PM CHANDON HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

5. Dollar Magic has had the misfortune of finding one better in her past four starts but you know she’s going to give 100 per cent, which is a head start. Back to the 1000m after being nailed by Legio Ten in the last stride two weeks ago and in what looks a fast run race the barrier will allow her to stalk rather than be attacked. Hard to see her not running well.

Dangers: 3. Time To Boogie worked through the grades well last time in and backs up after a win in a 740m trial on Monday. He’s a natural on pacer who should be hard to beat fresh. 2. So Good So Cool is a big watch first-up despite not winning below 1100m as yet. Put a couple of city wins together last time in around the 1200m trip and if they overdo it up front he will be strong late. 4. Squad trialled okay at Rosehill recently and he enjoyed a handy preparation in Victoria last time in with three wins and a third from four starts. Harder here but if there’s support it’d be a good push.

How to play it: Dollar Magic EACH-WAY ($5.00 TAB Fixed Odds).

Dollar Magic runs second at Rosehill on December 2

Race 10 - 5:55PM PETALUMA HANDICAP (1200 METRES)

10. Contemporary is becoming a bit costly but have to be forgiving for his third at Kembla Grange three weeks ago in a race where it was hard to make ground with the winner owning the event from the start in the heavy ground. He tried hard to run on from well off the pace. Just needs the right horse to follow home and he’s a chance to break through.

Dangers: 2. Dalaalaat led and was run down by Capo Strada over this course six weeks ago and comes here fresh in a race where he will likely have the chance to be close to the pace once again. He’s an honest performer and is an each-way chance once again. 3. Excelladus is a huge watch at his first run for Joe Pride. He has a strong first-up record and his two trials suggest he’s set to run well. Hasn’t won on a good track in 11 attempts so that’s probably the only query. Keep safe. 12. Junqueira has been in and scratched a few times of late, lands here on the limit with a soft draw after an even effort at Rosehill behind Salisano six weeks back. May have just peaked on her run there. No trials since but drawn well and if she stays solid in the market it’s a good sign.

How to play it: Contemporary WIN ($3.80 TAB Fixed Odds).

Contemporary runs third at Kembla on November 25
