Ramsey Nearly Ready To Raise The Stakes With Pinup

By Ray Hickson

Trainer John Ramsey sees no reason why emerging mare Pinup Miss can’t earn herself a shot at stakes company by claiming a second metropolitan win at Rosehill on Saturday.

The Scone trainer targeted a race on The Hunter undercard at Newcastle two weeks ago for the four-year-old and she produced a big finish to win over 1400m and he said she’s come on since that victory.

Pinup Miss carried 61.5kg second-up at Muswellbrook then dropped to 50.5kg after Robbie Dolan's claim at Newcastle. Darryl McLellan rides her at 53kg at Rosehill.

“She’s improved off her last run and has cleaned up in the coat a lot more,’’ Ramsey said.

“We always thought she had ability and I pinpointed that race, I thought it would suit her with the big drop in weight.’’

The Newcastle win, where she rushed home in 11.38 for her last 200m (Punter’s Intelligence), was Pinup Miss’s third start since switching to Ramsey from the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott stable after four starts which included a Hawkesbury win over a mile.

Ramsey is keen to get the mare up to that trip again after she contests the Mick Crook Memorial Handicap (1500m) where she’s $7.50 with TAB in an open betting race.

“It will suit her a bit more, Robbie said she wanted a mile but there was a 1500m there and she’ll go to a mile in a couple of weeks,’’ he said.

“We’ll be in the last half of the field and as long as we have cover I’m not too worried.

“You have to respect them all at the end of the day but it looks a similar sort of race to the other day. We’ll keep going and if she keeps winning she’ll end up being thrown in the deep end.’’

The deep end is likely to be the Group 3 Belle Of The Turf (1600m) at Gosford on December 27.

Don’t be surprised if stablemate In Good Health ($18) produces a cheeky first-up run in the John R Turk Shop Online Save Time Handicap (1300m), her first run since the Queensland Oaks.

The four-year-old, who started her career with Anthony Cummings in Sydney, was only beaten four lengths in the Group 1 before a break and Ramsey said the distance is a little short of her preferred trip but she has come up well.

“She’s a good filly, I’ve always thought she had a bit of ability and that’s why she went down to Anthony (Cummings),’’ he said.

“She’s trialled well and Robert (Thompson) said she will be right amongst them. She’ll come out and get balanced and as long as she is hitting the line I will be happy.’’

Meanwhile, Ramsey said Victorian Oaks runner-up Never Listen will be bypassing the Australian Oaks in the autumn with a view to tackling the Queensland version.

Never Listen is currently spelling and he said the filly will likely resume in a fillies race over 1400m at Randwick in April.

“We’ll give her a decent spell and go to Queensland with her,’’ he said.
