Queen's Cup And Royal Silks Feature On Longines Golden Slipper Day

Australian Turf Club hosts the Group 3 $160,000 Queen’s Cup (N.E. Manion Cup) on Longines Golden Slipper Day as Sydney racing has its turn to host an annual race in honour.

Each year on a rotational system, one Australian Metropolitan Race Club or State jurisdiction hosts the running of the Queen’s Cup, which includes a trophy donated by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.

(L-R): Tommy Berry, Chad Schofield & Rachel King model ATC’s new sets of Club silks, which will be operational when required from tomorrow

With the Queen’s Cup run over a distance of 2400m or longer, the Australian Turf Club chose its flagship raceday – Longines Golden Slipper Day – to host this year’s running.

Her Majesty may even have her own runner in the race if first emergency Chalk Stream gets a start.

Chalk Stream trained by Sydney’s 11-time premiership champion Chris Waller and ridden by star jockey Kerrin McEvoy has been entered in the Queen’s Cup for its second run in Australia carrying Her Majesty’s world-famous silks – Purple, Gold Braid, Scarlet Sleeves, Black Velvet Cap and Gold Fringe.

The design of Queen Elizabeth II’s racing silks has also inspired a new set of Australian Turf Club colours which will be in operation this Saturday if required.

Queen Elizabeth has raced a select group of horses in Australia previously, most notably Carlton House, who ran second in the 2014 Group 1 Ranvet Stakes on Longines Golden Slipper Day before finishing third at his next start in the Group 1 Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Royal Randwick.

Australian Turf Club will also honour the family of N.E. Manion at Rosehill Gardens for the 50th running this Saturday of the race named in his memory. N.E. Manion was a former Sydney Turf Club Treasurer and Chairman who served on the board from 1945 to 1977.

Sydney’s iconic $5 million Longines Golden Slipper – the Australian Turf Club’s flagship race and the world’s richest race for two-year-olds – headlines Australia’s biggest day of group 1 racing at Rosehill Gardens this Saturday.

Five Group 1 races – the most of any one raceday in the southern hemisphere – are part of day 2 of Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival, featuring world-class racing and live entertainment across the racecourse.
