The Listed $150,000 Lord Mayors Cup is the feature event at Rosehill Gardens this Saturday for a nine-race card that has attracted big fields and a total of 137 acceptances.
First run in 1944 and won by the champion mare Flight, the Lord Mayors Cup over 2000m this Saturday has 15 runners including two past previous winners of the race in Wu Gok and Grey Lion.
Parramatta City Council Lord Mayor, Bob Dwyer will attend on Saturday as part of the council’s long partnership with the Australian Turf Club’s Western Sydney home. The early TAB favourite at $4.80 with TAB (after opening $6 TAB) is Parry Sound, ridden by Rachel King and trained by Bjorn Baker.
Rachel King is aiming to be just the second female jockey to ride a winner of the Lord Mayors Cup following Kathy O’Hara’s win in 2019 on Grey Lion, who is ($9 TAB into $6.50) in early betting, and trained by Matthew Smith.
Two Chris Waller-trained gallopers are under double figures – Polly Grey at $5.50 and Wu Gok ($8.50), who is chasing consecutive wins in the Lord Mayors Cup.
In the race’s history only two gallopers have gone back-to-back, and it was in successive years, in Beau Tirage (1962-63) and Fair Patton (1964-65). Passetreul won the Lord Mayors Cup in 1972 and 1974.
The omen runner in this year’s race is The Lord Mayor, trained by Chris Waller and ridden by Brenton Avdulla, who is at $23 with TAB, and ran third in last year’s race.
