Punter's Intelligence Wrap - Royal Randwick 28th May

Lightly raced gelding Kanazawa put the writing on the wall that he’s come back improved in his second career preparation.

In his return to Randwick on Saturday, the three-year-old was solid first-up in the Sporting Chance Cancer Foundation Handicap (1200m).

The gelding resumed over an unsuitable distance and wasn’t suited to a moderate tempo. Punter’s Intelligence recorded that the first 600m of the race was run in 37.43, which was approximately 1.75 lengths slower than the Midway Handicap (1200m).

The Godolphin trained galloper took some time to get through his gears, but he ran on strongly to savage the line once he hit top speed. Further, he ran one of the fastest last 200m splits of the entire meeting in 12.50.

He only had one soft trial prior and will undoubtedly improve with fitness and over further distance second-up. In addition, he has key attributes to continue on an upward ratings spiral.

Jockey Andrew Adkins gave Moon Reader a perfect ride, and the winning move was between the 600m-400m where he ran the race quickest split in 11.56 to accelerate away from his main dangers and make ground on the leaders.

Shadow Devil who will improve with the run, ran the race fastest 400m-200m split in 11.68 and favourite Democracy Manifest was honest with factors against.

The Canterbury League Club Handicap was the fastest 1400m event of the day and is a definite race to follow.

The overall time was 1:27:69, which was around 1 length quicker than the TAB Highway (1400m), 4.5-5 lengths faster than the Precise Air Handicap (1400m) and approximately 1.5 lengths quicker than the Fujitsu General Handicap (1400m).

After all adjustments, the race rated highly relative to the meeting, and the decisive margins confirm the quality.

Winner Nothinsweetaboutme fought hard to win first-up and ran the fastest final 200m sectional of the race in 12.57.

Although Narrated had all favours leading at a slow pace, she was left in front a long way from home and is set to peak third-up over further distance. Continue to follow.

It might be worth giving And We Danced one more chance after being not suited again, and she just had too much to do when the on-pace runners skipped clear.

The three-year-old filly ran the race quickest 600m-200m split in 23.53 and maintained a strong finishing speed to the line.

Her figures confirm she has come back well this preparation and is just screaming out for a drier track or a race with a more genuine tempo.

The well-fancied Andermatt in the Taylor Construction Handicap (1100m) got too far back and had excuses in transit. Even though the gelding was back in the distance, he surged to the line running the fastest final 600m sectional of the entire meeting in 35.38.

Enchanted Heart was honest first-up where she raced wide without cover the entire trip and had to make a long-sustained run. In addition, she ran the second race fastest 400m-200m sectional in 11.51 but just peaked on her run.

Much Much Better is ticking along well and is more suited when he can follow the rail.

The PF Civil Handicap (1100m) was run at a farcical tempo and went out approximately 7.5 lengths slower than the Taylor Construction Handicap to the 600m mark.

Unlucky second placegetter Snowzone was brave in defeat after settling four-wide without cover the trip and ran one of the quickest final 600m sectionals of the meeting in 35.55.

Twice As Special is ready to win in perhaps easier grade and ran the entire meeting's fastest final 400m split in 23.66. Hulk tried hard in the inferior ground.

It’s worth noting Marakopa, who defied market expectations, ran a strong overall time winning by a dominant margin. Bonny Ezra was well beaten but stuck on ok after settling handy to a fast tempo, and all the other on-pace runners finished well behind him.

Fastest Final 600m: Andermatt 35.38.
