Kerrin McEvoy produced one of the rides of the spring on Godolphin galloper Pericles, and it was tactical perfection to win the feature Five Diamonds (1800m) at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.
McEvoy pushed forward from a wide draw out of the awkward 1800m start and slotted in behind the speed before getting the gelding to switch off throughout transit.
Leader Osipenko went out at a fast pace, with Punter's Intelligence recording his first 1200m in 1:14.40, approximately 11.5 lengths quicker than the Benchmark 78 event.
Pericles absorbed the pressure before McEvoy let him travel into the straight, and he was tough over the final furlong, holding off the late challengers and clocking 12.04 for that section.
The blinkers off was a masterstroke by trainer James Cummings, and the five-year-old ran close to his career peak.
Freedom Rally was brave in defeat after racing out on a limb throughout, albeit with cover, and he ran the race's fastest final 600m split in 34.40.
Attrition and Territory Express had genuine excuses and were held-up at key stages.
Territory Express was checked/blocked for the majority of the straight, and once finally clear, he went through the line full of energy. His final 200m in 11.87 was sharp.
Kingswood was back in distance and ran the race's fastest furlong in 11.85. He is an improving import in his second Australian prep, and watch for him to step back up in trip.
Belclare continues to go from strength to strength this campaign, and she produced a career peak in the Group 2 Hot Danish Stakes over 1400m.
The Bjorn Baker trained runner controlled the speed, sprinted hard between the 400m-200m in 11.00 and maintained a strong finishing speed to the line.
Magic Time's effort was full of merit after covering an extra 4.5m relative to Belclare and still clocked the race's fastest final 200m in 11.57.
Debutant West Of Swindon was arguably the run of the day in the Inglis Golden Gift (1100m) after being slow out, and he had the pace/bias against him.
To his credit, he made a long-wide sustained sprint against the track pattern and ran the entire meeting's fastest final 600m in 33.05. He can only improve from the experience and is one to follow.
Tim Clark rated North England well in the lead, and he kicked hard off the turn, running 10.96 between the 400m-200m, and was tough late.
Extractor caught the eye and ran the meetings second-fastest final 200m in 11.19.
Import Modesty was rising sharply in trip but ran fast closing sustained sectionals to win the Benchmark 78 over 1800m. For his final 600m/400m/200m splits he clocked 34.13/22.84/11.67.
A quick mention of Confess Our Dreams, who made it back-to-back wins and ran slick time in 1:03.20 over the 1100m. She hit the line hard and ran 11.28 for her final 200m.
Fastest last 600m: West Of Swindon 33.05
