Pride Confident New Recruit Has The Exfactor

By Ray Hickson

Joe Pride likes to give new horses into his stable a clean slate but he can’t ignore the record and form around Miss Exfactor ahead of her first run for him at Randwick on Saturday.

The four-year-old missed a place just once in nine starts for previous trainer Tony Gollan and that was her last run when fourth, as favourite, behind subsequent dual Group 3 winner Winter Bride.

And she’s done nothing but impress Pride ahead of the TAB Rewards Handicap (1100m).

“I like to treat horses with a blank canvas and make my own decisions about them,’’ he said.

“You want to create your own path and I find I’m best doing my own thing.

“Queensland form is easy to knock but their Saturday form can be quite strong. She’s raced against horses like Winter Bride and Houtzen so she has proper form.’’

Miss Exfactor has been respected in TAB markets since Wednesday and was $3.20 second elect on race eve.

Pride said he regards her two trials to be as good as they look, says she’ll race very handy and has an air of confidence about her.

“She’s effective on wet tracks and she makes her own luck up on the speed,’’ he said.

“She’s a nice mare and I’ve been impressed with her from the moment she walked in the door. I’m expecting her to resume with a bit of a bang.’’

Consistent mare Brook Magic brings an imposing fresh record into the Events By ATC Handicap (1000m) and while Pride is forecasting a typically solid performance he said her preparation has been slightly against the norm.

Brook Magic has won three from five first-up but hasn’t raced for close to six months.

“She looks great, she’s off the longest break I’ve ever given her so while she has a very good fresh record a lot of those runs might be off a slightly fitter base,’’ he said.

"We thought we’d give her a nice break and have her up for this time of year which is going to suit her.

“But she’s in good order and 1000m is her pet trip. A wet track would be to her liking, it’s a suitable race and I would think she will run well.’’

Miss Exfactor's latest trial at Canterbury on April 23

Pride said Passage Of Time is a deserved favourite ($4.40) in the Tab.com.au Handicap (1250m) after his narrow first-up defeat to Top Striker two weeks ago on the course proper.

Although the five-year-old doesn’t have an outstanding second-up record Pride said he proved in his first run as a gelding that he’s ready to break a run of outs stretching back to October 2017.

“He was unlucky but he wasn’t the only unlucky horse in the race,’’ he said.

“I just thought his run was really good, it was the first time he’d hit the line for quite some time and he has trained on really well since that run.’’

Despite being checked inside the 200m when behind the leader, Passage Of Time managed to run he second fastest last 200m of the race (11.69 Punter’s Intelligence).
