Pfieffer Adamant Future's Bright For Call Me Gorgeous

By Ray Hickson

Trainer David Pfieffer is convinced there’s a bright future waiting for Call Me Gorgeous beyond his first-up assignment at Kensington on Thursday.

The gelding has raced just once, for a gallant second on the same track, back in January and Pfieffer is hoping his patience will pay off in The Passchendaele Plate (1100m).

Call Me Gorgeous showed his immaturity in the early stages of his debut second to Ballet D’Esprit but showed his promise in the latter part as he kept finding the line off a wide run.

“The horse drawn outside him ran off the track and he got confused and probably chased it for the first 50m of the race,’’ Pfieffer said.

“Because of that he got caught three deep but it was good to see him balance up and attack the line.

“He’s a nice horse with plenty of ability and a big future. He’s probably still a bit immature but we’ve taken our time with him and I think we’ll see a solid performance from him.”

The three-year-old, $2.40 with TAB on Tuesday, has trialled twice in the lead up to his second campaign and won the latest of those on his home track at Warwick Farm on April 12.

Pfieffer said Call Me Gorgeous appears to have plenty of scope to go beyond the short course but again that’s not something he’s looking to rush into.

“I think his preparation leading into this race has been quite good and I’m quietly confident he’ll run a big race,’’ he said.

“Eventually I think he will get to seven furlongs. He’s a big horse by Deep Field, he’s got to learn his trade.

“He’s come from a breeze up sale so wants to get on with the job a bit early but racing will educate him.”

There are decisions to be made in the Pfieffer camp about where Vegas Raider and Angel Fund will race this week with the pair engaged in the Australian Imperial Force Handicap (1000m) as well as to be acceptors for Saturday’s Midway over 1100m at Rosehill.

He said there are already pro’s and con’s without the benefit of seeing the fields for Saturday’s race and ideally he’d split them up.

Vegas Raider has won two trials leading into his first-up run and Pfieffer expects wherever he runs he’ll be making his presence felt.

“He’s shown in his trials he’s going very well,’’ he said.

“With Kensington we’d be looking at the speed map, the barrier's not important for him.

“The big concern for him is whether he’s going to get maximum pressure in front, he’s probably going to get more pressure in a Midway and we’d be expecting a full field at Rosehill.

“He’s one of those horses that’s going to race best fresh and it’d be nice to keep him to that profile.”

Call Me Gorgeous wins a trial at Warwick Farm on April 12

Angel Fund was placed in a Midway in early March and has been freshened up since a below par effort on March 13 on the Kensington track, though she was only beaten 1.6 lengths by Everyone’s A Star.

“We gave her a let up to get past carnival time,’’ he said.

“She had a nice trial on Friday. The Kensington track might suit her better than Rosehill but we’d expect there to be plenty of speed in the Midway.”
