Neil Evans' Tips For Canterbury (Friday Night)

By Neil Evans

Track Good 4 and rail out 6m.

Race 1 3YO FILLIES MAIDEN HCP (1250m)

The three-year-old girls get us rolling on a track drying out all the time, and it looks at the mercy of All Too Hard filly 2. Miss Emma, particularly with a strong lead from the Chris Waller camp scratching one of her main rivals. Will jump a short-priced favourite after three placed efforts this prep, each time finding the line from midfield, and an important gear change has been made.

Dangers: Hard to see anything else winning, but keep safe at big odds 9. Kimono second-up; while 3. Assemble is a stablemate of the top selection, and market watch fresh behind two quiet trials.

How to play it: Miss Emma to win

Race 2 3YO & UP MAIDEN PLATE (1100m)

Back a little in trip at set weights, and debutant filly 12. Yvette by I Am Invincible arrives at the races for the Maher-Eustace stable with a big wrap, and the inside draw. Kept nice and fresh after a strong trial five weeks ago, and she's bred to thrive in soft ground if there's rain about.

Dangers: Another first starter, Nicconi colt 8. Viaconi from the Kris Lees yard is also drawn to get a charmed run behind two progressive trials. Watch the betting on resuming 2. Chartwell who won a recent trial, and shapes over the odds, despite drawing wide in his first run for more than nine months. Another recent trial winner on debut 11. Shamrock Sally by Charm Spirit goes in all exotic plays.

How to play it: Yvette to win

Race 3 3YO & UP MAIDEN PLATE (1550m)

Talented Pierro colt 4. Duke Of Lancaster can bounce back here at good odds and at his fourth start going up in distance. Finished well to twice fill a place, but lost his way back in the field last time and failed to run home. Drawn to sit closer here with cover, and a fourth different jockey in four starts goes on.

Dangers: Improving Zoustar colt 7. Northern Eyes has been given a month between runs and an easy trial heading into a third start, and flashed home late behind a smart one last time at this track. Progressive 3. Aix En Provence is primed to peak at his third start from the fence draw after beating all but the winner in two provincial runs to start his career, and was scratched from Kembla on Thursday to run here. Gap to the rest headed by 1. Abuse Of Power third-up from a low draw, with a 3kg claim.

How to play it: Duke Of Lancaster each way and box exacta 3,4,7

Race 4 3YO & UP BENCHMARK 72 HCP (1900m)

Out over the longer journey for the more seasoned brigade, and it stacks up ideally for tough and underrated five-year-old 5. Brynner deep into the prep, and back over his trademark distance. Charged home to win a weaker grade here over the same trip two starts ago befiore again hitting the line hard into a place on the Kensington track under the same weight. Softer draw means he settles a ltitle closer in the run, and as long as he's out and rolling past the 600m behind a reasonable tempo, can finish over the top.

Dangers: No question 7. Ring Ahoy is ready to win after working home strong in his last couple, the most recent forced back insde runners behind a slowish tempo. Similarly hard fit, he will look to get to the outside before the turn and surge over them. Keep safe 6. Monarchs Brae who led all the way fourth-up when holding off the former, and a senior jockey takes over. Despite a sharp weight rise, 2. Made By Khan will look to slide across and either contest or control the speed, and if he's left alone around here will take some catching. Include 3. Our Bambino fifth-up with weight relief; who can add plenty of value into trifecta and first four plays.

How to play it: Brynner to win

Race 5 3YO & UP FILLIES & MARES BENCHMARK 72 HCP (1550m)

A tricky and tactical all-girls affair here over a middle distance, and it could well play into the hands of an off-speed runner, with several go-forward gallopers in the race. Likely parking a few lengths back, progressive Newcastle mare 4. Lalaguna can make it two wins from her last three over 150m further. Led all the way in weaker class two runs back before finishing strongly in a more than handy BM 68 at Hawkesbury. Bit more depth here, but she can settle off the fence and just off the speed before producing a superior final 400m sectional.

Dangers: From the inside barrier and behind a dominant third start maiden win here three weeks ago, progressive 7. Sensory is one of three Waller-trained runners accepted, and a clear threat. Improving 6. Venetian Blue can improve sharply second-up off a five month spell. Watch for any money around staying mare 2. Angel Of Light who hasn't started since early August in tougher grade, but draws well and normally comes to hand early in the prep; while 9. Kenyada reloads in deeper company after finishing best on debut at the provincials when well backed at double figure odds.

How to play it: Lalaguna to win

Race 6 3YO & UP COLTS, GELDINGS & ENTIRES BENCHMARK 72 HCP (1550m)

A far different market shape in in the boys edition, with promising Snitzel colt 8. Head Of The Herd primed to claim a third career win at just his fifth start, and head towards Saturday company. Was heavily backed before leading and bounding away to bolt in a handy provincial CL1 second-up, and while this is naturally tougher, he looks brilliantly placed dropping to only half kilo above the minimum, and around a circuit that will suit his commanding pattern.

Dangers: Don't dismiss 3. Taraashoq back in class second-up off a lengthy break; while 7. Enotis resuming off a quiet trial can run into the minor money.

How to play it: Head Of The Herd to win

Race 7 5YO & UP BENCHMARK 72 HCP (1200m)

Similar level now for the older sprinters, and it shapes nicely for still lightly raced five-year-old 2. Shines who resumes behind a trial win for team Hawkes. Was dominant early in the prep last time against slightly thinner opposition, and with a senior pilot on here, he can stalk the speed before driving home from the 300m.

Dangers: Another one resuming and drawn right alongside, 4. Oakfield Duke was competitive enough in better races last prep, and has been fitted with two trials. The market will tell a story around Gosford-based 3. Diamond Diesel who comes to the city with a smart fresh record behind two progressive trials, but is drawn wide; while 8. Lancaster Bomber deep into his prep is the best of the rest.

How to play it: Shines to win

Race 8 3YO & 4YO BENCHMARK 64 HCP (1200m)

Confident Godolphin filly 6. How Dare You can strike second-up in what is now a weakened race. Loved the way she attacked the line late in her first run four four months. With that run under her belt, she can come with a rush late. Her only win so far came at this track in winter, and she's destined for bigger targets.

Dangers: Progressive mare 7. Rotorua hasn't started since a smart first-up provincial nine weeks ago, but has been fitted with two recent trials, winning the latest in dominant fashion; while 5. Hyde Park resuming off two trials can add value into exotics.

How to play it: How Dare You to win
