Lightly-Raced Mare Has 'Snowballed' Into Rosehill TAB Highway (Saturday)

By Tony Megahey

At six years, revived and airborne, predictions for Nostradamus protégé Prophet’s Daughter suggest her best is still yet to come following a dominant winning double and maximum versatility into the Rosehill Gardens TAB Highway on Saturday.

Albury’s multiple series-winning trainer Ron Stubbs, who over two decades has won city grade races in three states, produced the aptly named mare to win over 1400m home track with long-time ally and riding great Craig Williams in February.

And then freshened her for another big win back to 1175m with local rider Jason Lyon in late March at the Albury Cup Carnival.

Somewhat of a rarity in Highways at her age against far younger regional prospects, the mare has carried 58kg and 60kg for powerful wins, so a reduction to 55kg in the Class 3, $120,000, 1100m with Regan Bayliss on Saturday is appealing, as the Highways resume at “The Gardens” after the fabulous Group carnivals.

Prophet’s Daughter is raced by Ron’s family and friends, and he expands why at six years and six months, she is lightly raced with just 13 starts for an impressive résumé of three wins and five placings.

“A late maturer, fine, lightly framed, we put her back in the paddock for extended time to develop - this prep she’s just snowballed,” enthused Stubbs.

“She’s trained on nicely and mares generally hold their form. And the way she’s been winning, you have to come up while they’re eligible for this level of prizemoney.

“Always hard races these Highways with capacity fields so you need luck at 1100m but in our favour is an inside gate and nice weight drop.”

Particularly as Perennial and Super Impressive with six wins between them have drawn wide barriers.

“We should be able to position better than midfield and she’ll be strong late off that 1400m win.

“The way she’s been closing I thought she might even get out to a mile, and she was really unlucky there at Wagga before she put two together.”

At present Rosehill Gardens is a Soft 5 in fine weather.
