Kensington Winners - Tips For Wednesday 24th August

By Ray Hickson

Tips and race by race preview by Ray Hickson for Wednesday’s Kensington meeting. Selections based on a soft track.

Race 1 - 1:25PM GRAINSHAKER VODKA HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

5. Silvanito was put away after debuting in a stakes race in the late spring and given plenty of time. There’s been merit in his two trials this time around and the fact he’s still a colt is encouraging. In a race up for grabs he looks a good chance on what he’s showing.

Dangers: 2. Great Barrier Reef started odds-on in the Canonbury at his only start and didn’t finish off as expected. Also trialled twice leading in and the wide gate might not be such a disadvantage. Check betting but worth keeping safe. 8. Surf On Turf had good support at his debut back in March but disappointed behind Spacewalk on a heavy track. Latest trial was handy and he’s also worth another look. 4. Scorch is a market watch on the back of two soft trials on the synthetic in July. Draws well on paper and wouldn’t surprise if he shows up.

How to play it: Silvanito WIN ($3.90 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: SPLIT.

Silvanito runs second in a Warwick Farm trial on August 5

Race 2 - 2:00PM GHAIYYATH @ DARLEY HANDICAP (1300 METRES)

2. Zou Tiger looks a promising type and the form around his two seconds in the late autumn has been strong. Found the line well late in his second trial and kicking off at 1300m is a plus. He should take plenty of beating.

Dangers: 6. Summons is an interesting first starter from the Waller yard and he’s been taken along quietly in his trials. Any support could be significant and he should get his chance to show something at this trip. 3. Rakomelo was placed in the Canonbury back in January and resumed with an even effort behind Buenos Noches at Canterbury three weeks ago. Fitter for that and open to some improvement. 7. The Englishman is bred to appreciate a little further but he worked to the line well in his latest trial and the trip should suit first-up.

How to play it: Zou Tiger WIN ($1.95 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: EVENS.

Zou Tiger runs second in a Rosehill trial on August 12

Race 3 - 2:35PM TAB HANDICAP (1150 METRES)

5. Rocklily is capable fresh and has done more than enough in her two trials to suggest she’s come back pretty well. There looks to be genuine tempo, she handles all conditions and shapes as a good each-way chance.

Dangers: 3. Sneaky Paige was a shade disappointing here last start when hard in the market, she led and copped a bit of pressure before battling. Form around Shades Of Rose prior reads well and she’s entitled to another chance. 1. Never Second seems to be running back into form and she also bumped into Shades Of Rose at her last attempt, sitting handy but unable to match the winner’s dash. Back a notch here and must be included. 2. Brazen Song ran a very cheeky race first-up over this course then up in class she wasn’t up to the task at Randwick. Goes forward and could give a sight.

How to play it: Rocklily E/W ($6.50 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: ODDS.

Race 4 - 3:10PM BOWERMANS HANDICAP (1550 METRES)

7. Tuhinga could very easily back up his impressive win over this course from two weeks ago despite rising in class. He put a margin on them after enjoying a perfect run and potentially has a similar set up. He’s racing well this prep and can go on with it.

Dangers: 2. Cacofonix caught the eye first-up behind Pretty Wild and Pizarro then a shade disappointing at Randwick last time though he did get well back and didn’t really run on. Have to give him another chance. 11. Pink Ivory wasn’t disgraced in a couple of Group 1s at the end of her three-year-old season and did start $6 in the ATC Oaks. Trip suits her fresh and she’s one to keep a close eye on. 15. Fiordland can be forgiven for his last start failure, previous two runs were excellent for this sort of race and could bounce back.

How to play it: Tuhinga WIN ($4.60 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: SPLIT.

Race 5 - 3:45PM VINERY STALLIONS HANDICAP (1250 METRES)

3. Devil’s Throat didn’t quite measure up in the Hawkesbury Guineas before a spell but it was worth a shot on the back of a couple of wins coming through the grades. Yet to win first-up but has a consistent record so that’s not a knock. Looks the one to beat after scratchings.

Dangers: 9. Turning was far from disgraced first-up on a heavy track two weeks ago and is unbeaten second-up. A track in the soft range would be ideal for him and can only be fitter. Keep in mind. 6. Confessed will be an improver away from heavy ground and does have the profile to lift with a run under the belt. 10. Nipotino mixes form but did find his best second-up to win well at Kembla Grange. Gets every chance from an inside gate.

How to play it: Devil's Throat WIN ($3.30 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: ODDS.

Race 6 - 4:20PM VALE ALAN OSBURG HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

10. Arnold almost ran down Pizarro on debut then resumed with a dominant maiden win at Kembla earlier this month. The runner-up there has since won. Barrier likely no issue and if he’s as promising as he looked fresh he should handle the class rise.

Dangers: 2. Le Vizir backed up his Newcastle win with a very handy second at Canterbury last week where he closed strongly in the last 100m. Extra trip a plus and while he’s in top form he has to be considered. 5. Marchioness has been solid in two runs in Saturday company and will appreciate the class drop and likely the step out to 1400m. Good chance for her to put herself in the finish. 11. Communist is an up and comer who was two months between runs when scoring at Hawkesbury a couple of weeks ago. Can only be fitter and draws to get a nice run just off the speed. Go well.

How to play it: Arnold WIN ($2.30 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: EVENS.

Arnold wins at Kembla Grange on August 4

Race 7 - 4:55PM RANVET HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

10. Girl Mania was two months between runs and looked a bit unlucky when a close fifth at this trip at Kembla, behind a progressive horse. She’s a handy mare on her best form and this looks a very winnable race. Good chance.

Dangers: 4. Miss Jay Fox burst back to form with an impressive win over this course two weeks ago and while up 3.5kg she’d only have to repeat the effort to be right in the finish again. 3. Toro Toro looked super in scoring an easy first-up win at Newcastle over the 900m scamper. Solid performer around this level and if he can put two runs together he’s right in this. 6. Eyewitness is rarely too far away and you’d expect she will look to go forward here fresh. Fitter for one trial and only failure last prep was behind Mazu and Zapateo so that’s easy to forgive. Respect.

How to play it: Girl Mania E/W ($5.50 TAB Fixed Odds). Odds & Evens: EVENS.
