Kensington Winners - Tips For Wednesday 23rd August

By Ray Hickson

Tips and race by race preview by Ray Hickson for Wednesday’s Kensington meeting. Selections based on a good to soft track.

Race 1 - 1:25PM RANVET HANDICAP (1100 METRES)

3. Nadal is an interesting runner. Struck wet tracks in his first two starts and ran well but looked the part with a sharp turn of speed in winning his trial a month ago. Draws to have every chance to feature and looks a good each-way hope.

Dangers: 6. Ravenclaw is worth keeping safe on debut, he certainly wasn’t asked to extend in finishing close up in his recent trial at Rosehill. Market will be a pointer but on face value is in the mix. 9. Lost is trialling nicely for her debut, followed a close third behind Kimochi with an easy piece of work to win at Kembla Grange just over a week ago. May need some luck but commands respect. 10. Makarena has won two trials split by five months and lengthened well when asked to win the latest at Rosehill (same heat as Ravenclaw). One of the main chances.

How to play it: Nadal E/W ($5.50 TAB Fixed Odds).

Race 2 - 2:00PM TRESEMME & OMO HANDICAP (1300 METRES)

2. Gold Bullion had to a lot of chasing on debut and he did that valiantly to run a close second at Wyong to a short priced favourite. Fitter for that and the way he ran through the line says he’ll lap up the extra 100m. Hard to beat.

Dangers: 6. Unique Ambition gave a huge sight as a $101 chance on debut back in May in what looked a strong 2yo event and was rested. Found the line well in her latest trial and if she runs up to her first outing she should be a major player. 3. Carrazana started a well backed favourite first-up on the back of an impressive trial and was a little disappointing in running fourth after getting out in plenty of time. He trialled too well to be too harsh off one run so must include in the chances. 5. Suspect debuted in the same race and held his ground well to run third. Has the advantage of a handy draw and open to some improvement.

How to play it: Gold Bullion WIN ($2.90 TAB Fixed Odds).

Race 3 - 2:35PM MAGNUM & HELLMANN'S HANDICAP (1550 METRES)

4. Amor Victorious is perfectly placed here to repeat his strong win at Rosehill a couple of weeks ago. Down in class and while up in weight he draws to control his own destiny somewhere on the speed and only has to hold his form.

Dangers: 3. Dimaggio gets a better set up than he’s had in his past couple of starts in Midways and it wouldn’t surprise if he puts himself in the finish. Too far back in those races but in a smaller field with a soft draw could be tracking the leader. 5. Baranof has been thereabouts in Midway company and just failed last time out at Rosehill in the same race as Dimaggio. No reason why he can’t put himself in the finish again. 2. Scantoon brings some mixed form up from Victoria but hasn’t been far away of late. Beaten under two lengths at Sandown two weeks ago and in the small field has every chance.

How to play it: Amor Victorious WIN ($1.90 TAB Fixed Odds).

Race 4 - 3:10PM PKF SYDNEY HANDICAP (1250 METRES)

10. Boston Rocks is an up and comer who has been quite impressive in his on pace provincial wins this time in. Never in doubt from the front at Wyong when up to 1200m and has the speed to offset the slightly wide gate. Should measure up.

Dangers: 4. Bundeena had some specking when resuming over an unsuitable trip and he didn’t get out until the race was all over behind Our Kobison at Warwick Farm. Much better served up in distance now and while drawn out he should be strong at the finish. 9. Undivided won a handy form race on debut then up to Midway company he held his ground okay behind Hard To Say. That was a solid enough effort and he should be competitive again. 1. Cheerful Legend is back for his second prep for Nathan Doyle and he’s trialled okay leading in. Gate one and the claim give him every chance to run well fresh.

How to play it: Boston Rocks WIN ($3.00 TAB Fixed Odds).

Race 5 - 3:45PM PKF GLOBAL HANDICAP (1400 METRES)

2. Strombus was excellent in defeat coming off a six week break when a close fourth at Randwick back on July 29. Had a wide run there but kept finding to be beaten a length. Impressive winning over this track and trip prior to that and well served with the draw. Take beating.

Dangers: 6. Different Strokes resumed with a very nice effort in a Midway and he backed it up running on strongly at Warwick Farm two weeks ago. He found himself well back last time and if he can make use of a kinder gate he’s a threat. 1. Regal Pom disappointed when he resumed at Rosehill after tracking the speed from the inside gate. Down in class and only up 1kg after the claim so expect him to show up. 8. Smart Little Miss has been racing well without winning of late and tried hard as usual up in grade at Rosehill last start. She’ll run well again and is an each-way chance.

How to play it: Strombus WIN ($3.40 TAB Fixed Odds).

Race 6 - 4:20PM PKF NEWCASTLE HANDICAP (1150 METRES)

5. Sweet Baby Boom shapes as a big improver on her first-up run at Warwick Farm where she sat outside the lead and stuck on for fourth. She was a drifter there so strips fitter and has the blinkers on. Expecting her to lead from the wide gate and be hard to run down.

Dangers: 2. Secaution was the winner of that race after sitting back and arriving in time at the end of 1000m. Both wins have been first-up so needs to reproduce it but hard to ignore her. 6. Glacier Queen had support first-up at Hawkesbury and held her ground closer to the inside to run fourth there. Was trialling nicely leading in and down a bit in weight she’s capable of featuring somewhere. 9. Pink Cashmere was expected to feature first-up at Canterbury when hard in the market but just held her ground. Did trial well prior and fitter here so give another chance.

How to play it: Sweet Baby Boom E/W ($5.50 TAB Fixed Odds).

Race 7 - 4:55PM MICROPHONE @ DARLEY HANDICAP (1000 METRES)

9. Disneck probably holds the key to this race first-up as a gelding after contesting a string of stakes races as a two-year-old. Did enough in his latest trial to say he’s come back well and finds a winnable race. Like to see him solid in betting but a good chance.

Dangers: 8. Biographer stuck on very well after being involved in a speed battle up front before being run down by Our Kobison at Warwick Farm. Has all the favours from the inside gate this time and looks the logical danger. 6. Markwell Dreamer doesn’t win out of turn but he is a consistent sprinter who usually runs well fresh and it wouldn’t surprise if he runs into the money. Soft trial winner leading in. 4. Debussy is another honest customer and he’s racing quite well with his only blemish of late coming in a Highway from an outside gate. Each-way claims.

How to play it: Disneck WIN ($3.00 TAB Fixed Odds).
