John Schell's Tips For Scone (Friday)

By John Schell

Selections based on a good track

Race 1 - 1:00PM NEWGATE CLASS 1 & MAIDEN PLATE (2200 METRES):

8. Placid Pearl has only had the three starts and has been placed in two of them with a second on debut at Goulburn being followed by a fourth at the same track and then a close-up second as favourite at Hawkesbury last tine out. This looks a suitable race for her to break her maiden.

Dangers: 2. Brief Song has been placed in two of her four starts since resuming from a spell. She comes into this on the back of a last start fourth at Taree and is racing well enough to give this a shake. 3. Le Souci was a winner at Canberra two starts ago and followed that up with a solid last start second at Taree when running well. She should show up again with a repeat. 6. Justifiably has been placed in four of seven starts and should run boldly here if anywhere near his best.

How to play it: Placid Pearl WIN.

Race 2 - 1:35PM INGLIS COUNTRY BOOSTED MAIDEN PLATE (1000 METRES):

5. Pressnell is on debut for the Mack Griffith stable and has Aaron Bullock taking the ride. He’s had two trials and has won each of them and looks set to make a winning start to his race career.

Dangers: 9. Cresta Run is a filly having her first start here from a good stable. She has looked good in her trials and there’s no reason she can’t run well. 10. Quick Sharp has had two trials in preparation for her first start and she’s won each of those hitouts at Muswellbrook. She should run well here with Reece Jones taking the ride. 1. Devoted Deputy is a last start Kempsey placegetter with minor claims again.

How to play it: Pressnell WIN.

Race 3 - 2:10PM MUSWELLBROOK FORD CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1300 METRES):

5. Super Story has only won one of his 20 starts, but he has been placed in a further 11 starts. He resumed from a spell with a fourth at Narromine and should run well from the inside gate.

Dangers: 8. Point Loma ran well at Mudgee when resuming and since backed that up with an all the way win at Armidale as favourite. This looks within his reach. 7. Éclair had been racing well at this track with a win here three starts ago before failing at Port Macquarie last time out. She can lift back to this track. 10. The Mystery Guy was just behind the placings at Narromine when last produced and has place claims on that effort.

How to play it: Super Story EACH WAY.

Race 4 - 2:45PM LION BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (900 METRES):

6. Too Darn Lovely led them up at Tamworth when last produced and finished sixth when not beaten too far. She was placed at Moree before that and should take plenty of running down from on the speed.

Dangers: 5. Savoca hit the line at this track last time out to score a narrow but impressive win. This is no harder and he gets his chance to score again. 3. Pearls Treasure has been midfield in each of her two starts back from a spell at Muswellbrook and this track. She can be placed here. 2. Cumboogle is a last start Narromine winner and his previous form was sound. He can run well again here.

How to play it: Too Darn Lovely WIN.

Race 5 - 3:20PM SCONE EQUINE BENCHMARK 82 HANDICAP (1100 METRES):

1. Sharp Shock hit the line well to finish second at Randwick in Bm78 grade at Randwick three starts ago before running home well for a 10th in the Dubbo Cup. He since hit the line well again to win the Coonamble Cup and while he has a big weight here, he looks the one to hold out.

Dangers: 10. Last Frontier has a good record with three wins to his name from just the five starts. He won a couple on end at Tamworth then ran fifth at that track before being spelled. He’s performed well in two trials leading into this resuming run and should run well. 6. Very Sharp is a quality mare at best and is a last start second placegetter at Tamworth. She can run into the placings again. 2. Leave Me Some has been racing consistently and has a wide alley to overcome with Aaron Bullock to ride.

How to play it: Sharp Shock WIN.

Race 6 - 4:00PM DARLEY SUPER MAIDEN HANDICAP (1200 METRES):

1. Rennata resumed from a spell with a third at Newcastle and then hit the line very well to run third again at Coonamble. She’s on the up and this looks a nice race for her.

Dangers: 11. Alliri is having her first start and has had a number of trials in preparation. She’s drawn well here. 12. Antilocapra is on debut and has had two trials either side of a break. She ran fourth in the latest of them at Muswellbrook and is worth including among the main chances. 15. Cassette has had two starts and wasn’t beaten far when midfield in the latest of them at Canberra. She is on the improve and can make an impact in this.

How to play it: Rennata WIN.

Race 7 - 4:40PM GULLIVER'S MAIDEN PLATE (1400 METRES):

4. Like Lukey has been placed in three of four starts and finished fourth in the other. She’s a handy performer that’s had two trials leading into this.

Dangers: 11. Telecom is on debut after a few trials and a bold showing would not surprise. 13. Overwatch ran last at Hawkesbury when resuming and she’s been placed in one of three starts. She can improve in this. 5. Miss Romain debuted in Super Maiden grade with a fourth at this track in March and was then spelled. She’s had two trials in preparation for this and can sprint well fresh.

How to play it: Like Lukey WIN.

Race 8 - 5:20PM SCONE RSL BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (1400 METRES):

10. Éclair Encore won on debut at Taree when doing the job well and since then resumed from a spell and wasn’t disgraced in a small field when fourth of five on the Kensington track. This is an easier assignment.

Dangers: 3. King’s Duty hasn’t been too far away in his recent starts at Newcastle and he’s drawn to get a great run in this from barrier two. 8. Noble One is a last start winner that gets his chance to show up again in this grade. 11. Lucilago won at Nowra two starts ago then ran sixth at Orange last time out. She is worth including here if she can up to her best form.

How to play it: Éclair Encore WIN.

Best Bets:
Race 4 (6) Too Darn Lovely.
Race 6 (1) Rennata.

Best Value:
Race 3 (5) Super Story.
