Jockey Quotes - Sydney Cup

Find out what the jockeys made of their mounts after the Group 1 $2,000,000 Schweppes Sydney Cup (3200m) at Royal Randwick.

Dylan Gibbons (Explosive Jack): “I had to learn the hard way, I went down in a narrow defeat last time (Montefilia second in the G1 Tancred). It couldn’t have worked out better today, he just gave me a beautiful ride.”

“When I saw Cleveland not going that great I thought ‘either I’m going really good or he’s going really bad.’ Once I got him out the way I thought we were just going to whack away and run a gallant third of fourth, but as they stopped he didn’t and just fortunate to get these opportunities. It’s hard to put kids (apprentices who can’t claim) on in these sorts of races and I’ve been able to get the job done for them.”

“I can’t imagine how he (Dad) feels. It just makes me so happy how proud he is. My grandparents aren’t here today, I’m sure they would’ve loved it. This is one I’ve always dreamed about as a kid and I’ve had great support the whole time getting me there. To be able to do it and for everyone close to me to be able to share this moment with me. It’s not just for me, it’s for everyone who has helped me get to here. I hope we can all celebrate together.”

“You can’t explain it. I’ve always manifested these wins and thinking about what I’d do in the moment, but it just takes over for you. Just the pure joy of knowing that not only is it a great moment for me, but for everyone who’s helped me get to this point. I’m sure they’re enjoying it as much as me.”

Explosive Jack wins the Sydney Cup

Kathy O'Hara (True Marvel): “What a gallant horse. I had a fantastic run throughout and he kept finding. Halfway up the straight I thought where is the post. He was very gallant. The winner was a bit too good for him late. Credit to the team.”

Tim Clark (Knights Order): “Very brave effort. Thought all the way along he’s been going well if he gets the right conditions.”

James McDonald (Gold Trip): “Travelled really lovely. From the 400m onwards didn’t attack the line.”

Tom Marquand (Baron Samedi): “Travelled on the back of the Cup winner. Weakened off a bit.”

Rachel King (Arapaho): “Super run. The 3200m just takes that bit of a sprint out of him.”

Tom Sherry (Selino): “Thought it was a good run. Had to go back from the awkward alley. Run like that suggests he’s back to his best.”

Joao Moreira (Surefire): “Was a bit disappointing. Failed to fire.”

Winona Costin (Sir Lucan): “He just overdid it a bit.”

Kerrin McEvoy (Cleveland): “Disappointing. We had a nice trip around. Relaxed throughout the race. I was waiting for him to come up underneath me about the 1000m. But he didn’t so I gave him a reminder at the 700m. He failed to pick up and get home. Remains to be seens how he pulls up.”

Robbie Dolan (High Emocean): “She got back from a wide gate. It was a race nothing made up ground. I was under the pump a long way from home.”

Reece Jones (Amade): “Travelled well in the middle stages. Struggled in the conditions.”

Tyler Schiller (King Frankel): “Mark said he ran his race before when trying to saddle him up. He was arrogant so to see him come out and run that well, he’s probably done a good job.”

Dean Holland (Nerve Not Verve): “She had her chance in a solidly run Sydney Cup.”

Brock Ryan (Alakahan): “Super run. Kept building to the line nicely.”

Andrew Adkins (Pesto): “He ran a good race. Very honest. Stays the trip. Certainly fought hard.”
