Find out what the jockeys made of their mounts after the Group 1 $2,000,000 Moet & Chandon Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Royal Randwick.
Adam Hyeronimus (Tom Kitten): “Unbelievable. Gee he’s some horse. He’s a gentle giant but he’s got so much ability. I don’t think they’ve got to the bottom of him, I think he’ll be better next preparation.
“It’s fantastic to ride it for James (Cummings) and Godolphin. Obviously he’s a colt winning a Group 1 and he’s been the main seed all the way along through these races and for him to tick that box off is very pleasing. I’m sure he’s going to be very valuable and there’s no reason why he won’t win another Group 1.
“It was a messy run race, he was probably a little bit stronger than I anticipated. He was nice and relaxed going to the start and I was positive I wanted to hold a position but I wasn’t expecting the race to be run like that. Although he had cover he near enough raced without cover the whole race and he was just a little bit strong.
“I worked up on the back of tired horses. I was happy to cut the corner instead of peeling him out, I saw my opportunity and I took it. Once he got out I did think I’ve exposed him too early, but he’s just got so much ability."
Tom Kitten wins the Spring Champion Stakes
Kerrin McEvoy (Cap Ferrat): “Great run. Followed the winner through and just had to switch it out with the horse in the yellow just laying on me a little bit. Put forward a really good run out in trip for the first time.”
Brett Prebble (Ganbare): “He did a good job. Just got a little on the chewy there at some stage then I got him to relax. He hit a flat patch on the turn in. He was really game and ran through the line. I think he could run a Derby trip.”
Regan Bayliss (Raf Attack): “Extremely proud of his effort. He’s done this from a Newcastle Maiden all in his first racing preparation so looking forward to him furnishing and coming back in the Autumn.”
Dylan Gibbons (Kintyre): “He just fired up with the blinkers on. If his brain matches his ability he will put it all together but just not now.”
Jean Van Overmeire (Glad You Think So): “Think he has just come to the end of it this prep.”
Ryan Maloney (Port Lockroy): “Just didn’t quite see the trip out.”
Tommy Berry (Ravello): “We found a nice spot from the gate and travelled well. Thought I was a chance coming around the corner. Just got that bump from the winner and he never gained confidence after that.”
Tyler Schiller (Long Genes): “Just come to the end of his prep.”
Josh Parr (Medatsu): “Didn’t figure at any point.”
Jay Ford (Ramble On): No comment
Jason Collett (Tutta La Vita): “Tracked Tom Kitten everywhere. I just couldn’t go when he went. Just didn’t have the finish in me.”
