Jockey Quotes - Southern Cross Stakes

Find out what the jockeys made of their mounts after the Group 3 $160,000 Southern Cross Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick.

Hugh Bowman (Lost And Running): He’s a class horse who had the top weight because of his record. He’s a genuine G1 horse in my opinion. We expected a good performance. I didn’t expect the pace to be quite as strong as it was early but it allowed him to get into a really good rhythm.

“You could see mid-race he was a bit fresh and he wanted to get going with me but I was able to get him to just settle back underneath me from the 700m and it was pretty much all over from that point on. I was in complete control and I knew what he was going to give me up the straight. He certainly didn’t disappoint.

“He learned to settle toward the back end. When he went to The Hunter he was caught out wide but he was in a really good rhythm. There was no way I could have ridden him like that early on in the prep.

“This time I think John has got an idea of pushing him over a bit further whereas last time it was all about The Everest with him. He was very fresh early in his prep. He was almost out of control first run or two.

“He really came through that preparation, he’s only lightly raced. It is an absolute attribute to John’s patience. He understood from an early time what this horse had to offer and he’s starting to see the fruits of it now.”

Lost And Running wins the Southern Cross Stakes at Randwick

Josh Parr (Overpass): “He’s a star colt. Possesses so much ability but just ran into an extremely good horse today.”

Nash Rawiller (Standout): “Ran good. Had a lovely run behind the winner and thought he ran well.”

James McDonald (Laws Of Indices): “Super off one trial. Lovely run.”

Brock Ryan (Chat): “Really good run. He just needed the day out.”

Chad Schofield (Rock): “Nice first up run. Got going into the last furlong so when he gets over a bit further looks like he’s in for a nice prep.”

Tim Clark (Ashman): “Ok run to start his prep. He’s going to be better over a bit further.”

Sam Clipperton (King Of Sparta): “Probably just a bit too far back.”

Jay Ford (Superium): “Really nice. Closed off strongly.”

Rachel King (Inanup): “Probably just needs to come back in grade a touch.”

Regan Bayliss (Embracer): “Disappointing.”
