Find out what the jockeys made of their mounts after the Group 2 Chandon S Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens.
Kerrin McEvoy (Red Cardinal): “He’s been in good form. He’s got some ground that he likes at his last couple. He’s getting his toe in and showing his true form. He’s always been a lovely horse, I rode him in one of his Melbourne Cups out here, so it’s nice to get back on him and get a win on him.”
“The pace was medium and he travelled nicely. We got a nice run after getting a bad squeeze at the start with Patrick Erin, that didn’t help getting a spot, but I was happy through the 1200m, they went a little bit quicker from the 900m, and sort of put the race on for us.
“It ended up being a nicely run race for my horse. He was very game. As soon as I asked him he picked up and really went through that ground. So it ended up working out really well after a rocky start there.
“Obviously Kris has set him for the Sydney Cup I presume. He’s a horse that can stay further, we know that, and with a wet time through the Sydney Carnvial around Sydney Cup time he wouldn’t be out of place in a race like that.”
Red Cardinal easily wins the Sky High Stakes at Rosehill Gardens
Corey Brown (Patrick Erin): “Never got going, he was taken out of the race a little bit early, but never travelled.”
Opie Bosson (Age Of Fire): “Struggled to pick his feet up in the ground.”
Tommy Berry (Tavago): “Disappointing today, he didn’t stretch out. Obviously he’s had issues in the past, he felt fine today, but we’ll wait and see how he comes through it.”
James McDonald (Brimham Rocks): “He’s going alright, travelled well but failed to finish it off.”
Michael Walker (Samadoubt): “He ran super backing up, just lacked that killer punch.”
Jason Collett (Goathland): “Just out-sprinted when they took off, he kept finding the line though.”
Sam Clipperton (Rodrico): “Good effort, he loves the ground, kept him hard up against the fence and he gave a good sight.”
