Jockey Quotes - Sapphire Stakes

Catch me if you can tactics paid off for the second time running for the Darren Weir-trained Quilista.

Find out what the jockeys made of their horses’ runs in the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick.

Damian Lane (Quilista): “She’s got great sustained speed, she just wants to run, I was just the pilot, I just sat there and held on, luckily she was good enough to do the rest.

“Darren was very persistent on trying to get her to settle in her first preparation in Melbourne. She came over from Western Australia where she had done this most of the time, she didn’t take to it at all. This preparation we’ve sent her along in front and she loves it.”

Hugh Bowman (Ghisoni): “Happy with the run. She’ll be better for it.”

Jay Ford (Spright): “She travelled well into it but Danish Twist ran us off on the bend and she didn’t get warm off the bend.”

Glyn Schofield (Raiment): “Beaten a long way out.”

Kerrin McEvoy (Ravi): “She ran well but the leader was too good.”

Ben Melham (Danish Twist): “Disappointing.”

Blake Shinn (Lubiton): “Great run. Encouraging signs for this preparation.”

Michael Dee (White Moss): “Very tough run. She stuck on very well first up so she is in for a very good prep.”

Tim Clark (Faraway Town): “Got back but was good late.”

Jason Collett (Sugar Bella): “We went back off the gate and the race got away from us. Even so, she probably didn’t finish it off as well as she has in the past.”

Corey Brown (Nieta): “It’s too far for her. She’s a 1000m mare or 1100m max.”

Brenton Avdulla (Invincibella): “She was really finding the line well late. Good way to start her prep.”

Andrew Adkins (Hetty Heights): “She ran a tremendous race. The speed was way too hot and she’s looking for 1400m.”

Craig Williams (Fragonard): “Rode her back. In a Listed race she’ll be very competitive.”

Christian Reith (Shazee Lee): “It was a really nice run. A good return and she’ll take improvement off it.”

Michael Walker (Slow Burn): “She went super. I got smashed out of the gates and I said to Les it’s probably the way to ride her (quiet).”
