Jockey Quotes - Reisling & Todman Stakes

Find out what the jockeys made of their mounts after the Group 2 $300,000 Yarraman Park Reisling Stakes & Group 2 $300,000 UNSW Todman Stakes (both 1200m) at Royal Randwick.

REISLING STAKES

Kerrin McEvoy (Seven Veils): “She did land in front quite easy. It is hard work with them, hopefully we don’t get any rain during the day because it is soft enough or heavy enough but you don’t need to be able heavy ground or rain affected ground to be featuring today.

“I hadn’t ridden her before, but I had a look at her replays, had a chat with Mark (Newnham), young Tommy (Sherry) and I gave Josh Parr a text when he landed in Melbourne. They just said to take her steady, take her quiet. Mark’s parting words were if she lands in front so be it.

“She got into a nice rhythm in front, handled the ground and she gave a nice little kick when I asked her. She clocked off a little bit late when she spotted the winning post. There is improvement to come, she is a nice, leggy filly.

“Whether she is up to a [Golden] Slipper remains to be seen but she handles that ground (rain affected). If I owned her, I would be having a crack.”

William Pike (Dashing Legend): “Good run.”

Tim Clark (Ojai): “She ran honestly in testing conditions.”

Tommy Berry (Russian Conquest): “Just didn’t handle that Heavy 10. She travelled really well through it like she did in trackwork on Tuesday but you never know until you let them off the bit and it found her out.”

James McDonald (Greece): “Did not handle the ground one iota.”

Sam Clipperton (Stuck In A Dream): “Just came a bit soon for her.”

TODMAN STAKES

Jason Collett (Sejardan): “I’ve loved him from day dot. He is a raw type with a good head on him and he makes the job easy. It was a good effort today. He probably wasn’t overly keen on that part of the track to be there and he had to do a little bit of work to get into the race but he toughed it out late.

“He sweated up beforehand but Gary said to me ‘it’s Grand Finals in two weeks’ so I would like to think there is still a bit more improvement there and am looking forward to it.”

Chad Schofield (Boyfriend): “Good run. Winner just came off our back and was a touch better today but he’s a nice up and coming horse.”

Hugh Bowman (Shalatin): “He ran an improved race and he’s got improvement to come.”

James McDonald (Showcourt): “Very nice horse who was very unlucky.”

Tommy Berry (Calgary Stampede): “Just a bit sharp for him over that trip, especially on that ground.”

Tim Clark (Psychiatrist): “He ran well up in grade. Probably a bit better on a quicker surface.”

Sam Clipperton (Richon): “When the penny drops he’ll make a nice horse.”

Tom Sherry (Soobooco): “Just not up to them. Has a lot of improving.”
