Find out what the jockeys made of their mounts after the Group 2 $1,000,000 Bisley Workwear Premiere Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick.
Hugh Bowman (Lost And Running): “He’s very effective over 1400m and even last start he was beaten for speed when the speed went on and ran through the line well. Although I went earlier than I would’ve liked I just wanted to take luck out of it. I was supremely confident going into the race and he’s going to improve again off this into the Everest.
“What I’d love to get though is better track conditions, not that it’s anyone’s fault, it’s just the rain we’ve had. But if we get a fine week Everest week, it’s going to assist the others too, but I think you’ll see the best of him. Not necessarily firm ground, but just not the heavy.
“He was a bit more settled going into the race today. I got confidence from riding him work during the week. That nervous energy that he felt first-up just wasn’t there today. When Rachel (King) dropped in on Overpass I was happy to follow her.”
“But it just took the momentum out of this horse and I just had to wait and hold him up, and I just got sick of waiting so I’ll pulled him out and put him where he needed to be. He quickened up and he did everything I knew he would do, he was feeling the pinch late no doubt about it. When you get an improving track, fingers crossed, for the Everest he’s going to be a force to be reckoned with.
Lost And Running wins the Premiere Stakes
Sam Clipperton (Mazu): “Spot on. Disappointing we didn’t win but really happy with him going forward. He’s improved lovely from his first up run and expecting him to improve again.”
William Pike (Masked Crusader): “He went very well. I dived up the inside there. A little bit of luck come the next one, we’ll be looking good.”
Jim Byrne (Apache Chase): “It was a huge effort. He is not a horse that likes these sort of really deep, slogging tracks and coming to the 300m I thought I was in for a really big chance. It was a bold effort. I thought if it was a 5 or a 6 he’d be right there.”
Tim Clark (Kementari): “Terrific run from him. He tagged onto the back of them early and cut through between them in the straight. Really hit the line well.”
Rachel King (Overpass): “Really happy with his run. He doesn’t handle these heavy tracks quite as well. Super brave in defeat.”
Robbie Dolan (Shelby Sixtysix): “He is just going to need a few more runs before he can be competitive in this sort of grade.”
Dylan Gibbons (Prime Candidate): “He’s an old warrior but just found them a bit rich today.”
Regan Bayliss (Brutality): “Gee he has run out of his skin this horse especially the last furlong. He really motored through the line. He’s in for his best prep yet.”
