Jockey Quotes - JRA Plate

Find out what the jockeys made of their mounts after the Group 3 $160,000 Sharp Extensive IT JRA Plate (2000m) at Royal Randwick.

Hugh Bowman (Polly Grey): “I was expecting Anthony Cummings’ horse (Cryptogram) to lead but when Robbie (Dolan) didn’t show a great deal of purpose I was more than happy to take it up. I wasn’t going to give her a canter before the start but I thought I would.

“She can be a mare that just overtravels a little bit, that’s why I was just going to trot her at the start. But she was so relaxed in the warm up it just gave me a bit more confidence, if the option to lead was there, to make use of that. It was pretty much parcelled up at that point. She just got into a really smooth rhythm and I was just a passenger really.

“I thought I went at quite an even tempo, I didn’t think I went particularly slow. I didn’t go particularly fast either. She was just in such a beautiful rhythm and she’s a mare that does like these sorts of conditions so that’s very important on days like today. She was in the right spot and got the job done with authority.

“It was pretty straight forward for me. I didn’t really expect to lead but if the option was there it would be an advantageous spot to be in. She was really relaxed before the race which can be unusual for her, it’s a while since I’ve ridden her at the races. But once she got in front and got into that really good rhythm down the back I was supremely confident that she’d get the job done and she did it with authority.”

Tommy Berry (Numerian): “Massive improvement up to the 2000m and I think he will appreciate the step up again to 2400m.

Kerrin McEvoy (Icebath): “She didn’t run the trip out so paints a fairer picture for the Spring.”

Jay Ford (Brutality): “Got shuffled back further than I would have liked but he never threatened today.”

Damian Lane (Marroni): “Disappointing today.”

Regan Bayliss (Purple Sector): “He’s much better on top of the ground so just didn’t handle the track today.”

Chad Schofield (Pappalino): “Nice first up run. Probably a horse to watch when he gets over further.”

Robbie Dolan (Cryptogram): “She just couldn’t lead and get her own way and that is probably the best way for her.”
