Find out what the jockeys made of their mounts after the Group 1 $750,000 James Squire Metropolitan (2400m) at Royal Randwick.
Rachel King (Just Fine): “I think that proves he stays 2400m. Funny when I spoke to Gai (Waterhouse) this morning, not that I had a question mark about the 2400m but a question mark people had.
“I just mentioned that and she said ‘Where was this horse born?’ I said ‘England’ and she said ‘Exactly, your home town. Of course he’ll stay.’ Gai and Adrian couldn’t have given me any more confidence. The whole team at home have put a lot of effort into this horse and all that work has helped him to adapt so quickly.
“Spirit Ridge (2nd) got it pretty comfortable in front and I was aware that he’s a horse that really does stay. I wanted to give my bloke as easy a time as possible and not give him too much work to do. Luckily once he got his nose in front he was very tough.”
Just Fine wins the James Squire Metropolitan
Regan Bayliss (Spirit Ridge): “Got into a great rhythm. Thought we’d pinched it at the top of the straight and when Just Fine went past him he stuck his head out and ran right through the line. An older horse that keeps going well.”
Kerrin McEvoy (Kalapour): “He has run well. A nice trip around and gave a nice gallant effort up the running. The first two were off and gone.”
Chad Schofield (Navajo Peak): “Too far.”
Damien Oliver (Cleveland): “He moved up like he was a real chance coming to the turn. Then didn’t quite go on with it."
Tim Clark (Major Beel): “Took a little while to find his spot but was beaten early on and may appreciate more give in the track.”
Dylan Gibbons (Bois D'argent): “A bit further back than I wanted. From there he almost travelled too well into the straight and left me in a tricky spot.”
Michael Dee (Manzoice): “Didn’t have a lot of room to really wind up and get at them in the straight. At the same time I didn’t think there was alot there.”
Tahlia Hope (Ho Ho Khan): “He ran super. The gate wasn’t ideal ending up further back than what we would have liked but ran an honest race.”
Jenny Duggan (Torrens): “He ran a super race. Was stuck deep but still finished off very strongly.”
Jamie Kah (Benaud): “He feels like he wants 3000m+. He was very dour early but his work late was good.”
Zac Lloyd (Military Mission): “He had a super run. Was really game in his run. If he draws a barrier he definitely finishes third and a couple of lengths from the winner.”
Jay Ford (Al Aabir): “On the week back up it just took the edge off him. Raced very one paced.”
Tyler Schiller (Mr Waterville): “Probably had to do it a bit tough coming from last but he put up a good fight then faded a bit late.”
Kathy O'Hara (Wineglass Bay): “He was a solid effort. He probably lacks a bit if turn of foot in this grade. He’s a genuine horse.”
