Find out what the jockeys made of their mounts after the Group 2 $2,000,000 Toyota Forklifts Hill Stakes (1900m) at Rosehill Gardens.
Beau Mertens (Attrition): “It’s been a long journey, obviously a year to the day winning the Toorak. We’ve been on a ride. He’s been unbelievable for my career, this horse. I’ve stuck by him where he’s put in a few bad ones but I’ve always had faith that he could come back. And for him to do that, first time stepping up to 1900m, just unbelievable.
“Me and Harry Coffey went and walked the entire track to get a good guide on it. We had a few talks about it and how it is a bit of a tricky track to ride.
“He just jumped so well from the gates, I was able to take him across, he did no work, and I’m not going to lie, it turns a bit this track so I was getting a bit lost. But once he tracked up from the 600m on the bridle, I just knew he was going to be hard to catch.
“I’m just so happy for the horse, so happy for the team. It’s been a journey like I said. This ownership group, they’ve stuck by me the whole time with him and I couldn’t thank them enough.”
Attrition wins the Hill Stakes
Zac Lloyd (Kovalica): “He has gone fantastic. Couldn’t have gone any better. I wanted to hold a more prominent spot on him but he’s such a laid back horse. It would have had him out of his comfort zone but he ran fantastic.”
Tim Clark (Royal Patronage): “He ran really bravely. It just took him a little while to adapt to that steadier tempo over the 1900m. I thought he was very courageous up the straight.”
Nash Rawiller (Pericles): “I just didn’t feel he finished the race off as well as he could have. They went a nice genuine gallop, he was beautifully placed, going better than anything at the 300m and couldn’t round the race off.”
Harry Coffey (Nonconformist): “He ran well again. His best work was the last 200m so maybe he’s wanting even a little bit further now.”
Chad Schofield (Golden Path): “He has come to the end of it. We had a great run, followed the winner but he was gone quite early in the straight. He stuck on bravely.”
Adam Hyeronimus (New Endeavour): “I thought his run was honest. There is a nice race coming shortly for him.”
Kerrin McEvoy (Navajo Peak): “Would have liked to have used the gate a little bit better. Just got back and travelled well. Maybe didn’t round it off as well as I would have liked.”
Reece Jones (Stockman): “Crying out for a bit further still.”
