Find out what the jockeys made of their mounts after the Group 2 $2,000,000 Petaluma Hill Stakes (1900m) at Rosehill Gardens.
Nash Rawiller (Montefilia): “Apparently the trackwork rider said on Tuesday that she’d win on Saturday. Good on him, great judge. If there was another 100m she wins by three and a half or four (lengths). She was motoring that last 100m.
“I’d imagine Yulong would get a great thrill out of that. Highly talented mare who has always promised to be one of our best and today she showed a glimpse of that. They’d be rapt and I’m sure she’ll be a good mum one day.
“She’s a big horse, she quickened well. I felt we were able to sneak through ok, I don’t know how the replay looked but it felt that way. I thought I’ll take my time. It’s a fine line between keeping them balanced, keeping momentum at such a crucial stage of the race and try not to cause interference. Full credit to her, she got herself up off the deck and got there.”
Montefilia wins the Hill Stakes
Adam Hyeronimus (Hoo Ya Mal): “He ran great. Just a bit of an awkward horse. Late on just wanted to wander around and bump into the winner. Probably would have lost on protest. Horse has gone fantastic.”
Dylan Gibbons (Protagonist): “Brave performance. Had to persist for a needle eye. Was gallant in defeat.”
Ryan Maloney (Numerian): “I thought he ran through the line really well.”
Tommy Berry (Zeyrek): “He ran a great race. The race he always does. Just does worry me that he hasn’t put them away yet.”
Billy Egan (Young Werther): “He ran well. Draw might have cost him a place.”
Tim Clark (Luncies): “Good honest run. He is ticking over well.”
Tyler Schiller (No Compromise): “Massive run. Coming from last he got a bit of luck hooking onto Montefilia in the straight. I thought he ran on really strongly.”
Kathy O'Hara (Sky Lab): “Not a bad run. Slowly run race and need some rain around.”
Rachel King (Hosier): “I think he might be in need of a break.”
Koby Jennings (Mount Popa): “We were forced to make our way to the front. Got the easiest run once we got there. Probably just the second up.”
Brett Prebble (Hinged): “A lot better this time. She has bounced back good. She travelled a bit too strong actually. Hit a flat patch when they quickened. Looking for a bit of cut in the ground I think.”
Kerrin McEvoy (Magical Lagoon): “Wasn’t too bad. We were three deep with some cover the whole way and travelled nice. I think she will enjoy getting to Randwick over a similar trip.”
Jason Collett (Fireburn): “Had a wide run. No luck.”
