Find out what the jockeys made of their mounts after the Group 1 $750,000 Winx Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick.
James McDonald (Anamoe): “He’s a superstar. He’s a lovely horse. Dare I say it I think he’s definitely gotten better from 3 to 4. Obviously some can, some don’t but this is a different horse. He’s more alert, he’s putting it all together. It was great to show a performance of a horse who is obviously improving. He will only get better as he gets on. I don’t have enough words to say about him. I can’t speak highly enough about him because he’s just an absolutely beautiful horse. Lucky I’ve strapped myself to him.
“He’s always shown quality from day dot. His Sires win was superb. It was the best feeling I’ve had in a race in terms of the fact I was three back and just accelerated and put 4 to 5 lengths on a field which was pretty impressive. To do what he’s done today, obviously he’s been beautifully prepared with two trials so he was here to win. I say there is more to come. It’s great to see Godolphin keep this colt in work. I think he’s got some big targets ahead of him.
“This prep he’s going to be the complete package. Even last prep over 1400m he was getting the job done but when he won the Rosehill Guineas by 10 lengths, he would lay in. Today he went straight as a bullet. He was there for me when I wanted him to arguably in the worse part of the track.”
Anamoe wins the Winx Stakes
Hugh Bowman (Fangirl): “Great return.”
Brenton Avdulla (Profondo): “He went huge. I got caught wide but he ran enormous.”
Tommy Berry (Mo'unga): “He was alright. He needs a bit of time to get his revs up and get going. With horses outside him he didn’t get the chance today. By the time he was ready to go the gaps were gone.”
Sam Clipperton (Stockman): “Very happy with him. A stayer first up, he’s gone terrific.”
William Pike (Hilal): “He went well. Leading it not ideal for him.”
Reece Jones (Benaud): “Super first up effort. Hopefully in for a good prep.”
Rachel King (Forbidden Love): “Travelled super but just didn’t quite fire in the finish. Hope she will take a bit of improvement from that.”
Kerrin McEvoy (Icebath): “Pleased with her effort. She will take improvement from that.”
Nash Rawiller (Hinged): “I was really happy with her. She just lacked a little bit of turn of foot at the top of the straight but she still hit the line well.”
